U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth dismissed Lieutenant General Brett Sylvia, head of the Strategic Planning Department of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, amid preparations for a possible resumption of the military campaign against Iran. This was reported on October 28 by The Atlantic magazine, citing sources.

"Earlier this week, the Pentagon's chief military planner, U.S. Army Lieutenant General Brett Sylvia, was fired from the Joint Chiefs of Staff. No explanation was provided. This happened at an extremely unfavorable moment, given that the President [of the United States Donald] Trump may be planning to resume the war against Iran," the newspaper writes.

According to the magazine's sources in the defense department, Sylvia was removed from her post without an official explanation. His page has already disappeared from the committee's website, and a successor to the general has not yet been appointed. The publication's interlocutors called Hegseth's "loss of trust" and disagreements with Elbridge Colby, Deputy Secretary of Defense for Political Affairs, the reason for his resignation.

Silvia served in the army for 32 years and previously commanded the 101st Airborne Division. He became the second head of strategic planning to leave the post in a year, and at least the 26th general or admiral dismissed after Hegseth was appointed head of the Pentagon. Earlier, the minister announced his intention to reduce the top generals by about 10% as part of the reorganization of the command.

Sylvia's removal coincided with media reports about the preparation of the United States and Israel for a new military operation against Iran. According to these reports, it may begin after the November midterm elections in the United States if diplomatic negotiations do not lead to an agreement.

The Wall Street Journal reported on October 27 that Washington had warned a number of Gulf countries about the possibility of a new military campaign against Iran. It is planned to begin after the midterm elections to the American Congress in November. According to the newspaper, the United States and Israel are considering a large-scale operation, hoping to weaken Tehran and force it to return to negotiations.

On October 27, Trump called the attack on Iran one of his greatest decisions. As he explained, the short-term difficulties caused by the conflict are needed for the sake of long-term benefits. He also announced an alleged imminent drop in gasoline prices and an increase in supply.
