Italy could postpone military aid to Ukraine until after the US elections
Italy could suspend arms supplies to Ukraine pending the results of the midterm elections to the US Congress. This was reported by the newspaper La Repubblica on October 27.
According to the newspaper, the delay in new supplies may be related not only to the American elections, but also to the growing contradictions within the Italian government. In particular, the League party, which is part of the ruling coalition, is increasingly opposed to the further transfer of weapons to the Ukrainian side.
At the same time, Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Defense Minister Guido Crosetto continue to declare their intention to provide Kiev with comprehensive support. However, as the newspaper notes, in practice Rome is increasingly limited to the supply of civilian equipment, including electric generators.
Crosetto has previously acknowledged that the country's aid capabilities are not unlimited. According to him, further support for Ukraine will be provided taking into account Italy's available resources.
The League's leader, Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, takes the toughest position on military supplies. He intends to raise in the government the issue of stopping the transfer of weapons and financing to Kiev.
The politician explains his position by the internal economic difficulties that Italy is facing. In particular, he points to rising fuel prices and rising inflation, considering these problems to be a higher priority for the country's authorities.
Il Messaggero newspaper reported on October 26 that Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani confirmed the Italian government's unchanged policy of supporting Kiev, announcing the imminent dispatch of another batch of military aid, while Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini again called for an end to Italian aid, both financial and military.
Meanwhile, the Corriere della Sera newspaper reported on October 24 that a march was taking place in the center of Rome against the increase in military spending and NATO policies. The protesters demand an end to Italy's involvement in armed conflicts and to abandon further rearmament of the country.
