The intention of representatives of the US Democratic Party to initiate an audit of the deal of the administration of US President Donald Trump on the supply of Russian diesel fuel is contrary to the interests of Americans. Evgeny Semibratov, Deputy director of the Institute for Strategic Studies and Forecasts at the RUDN University, and a political scientist, told Izvestia on October 24.

"America is very much tied to diesel. <...> Roughly speaking, it is impossible to move a railroad train from New York to Nevada without diesel. Because they have diesel—powered railway transportation. <...> Everything inside the continent is strategically tied to diesel without any alternative," the expert noted.

The political scientist pointed out that Trump's opponents are trying to challenge the feasibility of supplies, despite the obvious economic benefits. According to him, think tanks and consulting agencies close to the Democrats recognize the financial benefits of the agreement.

"They are globally asking themselves one question: how much economic benefit will there be, and they admit that it will be, is equivalent to setting a precedent for lifting sanctions against Moscow?" Semibratov added.

The expert concluded that energy has great potential and can become one of the key areas in relations between Russia and the United States.

The Washington Post reported on October 22 that the Democrats intend to initiate an audit of Trump's deal on the supply of Russian diesel fuel. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee has already sent a request to the companies involved in the deal to preserve all documentation ahead of a possible parliamentary investigation by the Democrats.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said on October 23 that the first three tankers with Russian diesel fuel were already heading towards the eastern coast of the Atlantic Ocean. According to him, Russian companies may export 500,000 tons of diesel as early as October as part of supply agreements to the United States and the global market.

On October 21, Special Envoy to the United States Stephen Witkoff thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for the decision that allowed the resumption of diesel fuel exports to the United States and global markets. He added that Trump appreciated this step against the background of the economic shock in the world. The Russian President, in turn, noted that after the announcements of deliveries from Russia to the United States, diesel prices on world markets decreased by 5-6%.
