A powerful nuclear arsenal is the main factor in ensuring Russia's security and sovereignty. This was stated on October 8 by Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center (NRC), in an interview with Politika magazine.

"We are alive today only because we have one of the best and most powerful nuclear arsenals in the world. This is our main "talisman," the Kommersant newspaper quotes an excerpt from an interview.

At the same time, Kovalchuk drew attention to the gradual weakening of the role of nuclear weapons as a deterrent. According to him, if previously the main nuclear powers were the USSR and the USA, today about a dozen states possess such weapons.

At the same time, other countries are also beginning to consider it as a necessary condition for maintaining their own sovereignty, despite the current non-proliferation regime.

In addition, the scientist pointed to a decrease in the fear of a possible nuclear conflict among modern generations. He explained that people born after the Second World War often perceive the consequences of such an escalation only through television and computer games.

"The fear of nuclear war has disappeared from today's generation, and the current leaders of Western states have no small "merit" in this," Kovalchuk concluded.

On October 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the level of modernization of the Russian nuclear forces had reached 98%. Earlier, the president stressed that no one in the world has such weapons of destruction as the Russian Federation. According to him, the Russian side had to constantly adapt to external pressure, developing its military potential.
