Actor Kamron Jones will play Tupac in the biopic about Snoop Dogg.
American actor Kamron Jones will play rapper Tupac Shakur in the biopic "Snoop" about the life and career of Snoop Dogg. Lauren London also joined the cast, who got the role of musician Beverly Tate's mother. The film will be released abroad on August 6, 2027. This was reported by Variety magazine on August 25.
Who will play Tupac in the Snoop Dogg movie
Tupac Shakur will be played by Kamron Jones, known for the TV series "Panic", "Judgment Night" and "Shameless". The actor also landed the role of Kuan in the third season of the drama Valley of Temptation.
Jones became the second confirmed performer of the role of a major star of Death Row Records in the film. Earlier it was reported that Dr. Dre will be played by Miles Bullock B, who starred in the TV series "Snowfall" and BMF.
For Jones, Shakur's portrayal will be one of the biggest roles of his career. Tupac was previously played by Demetrius Shipp Jr. in the 2017 biographical drama Tupac Shakur: Legend. That film was entirely dedicated to the rapper's life, while the new film will show him as part of the story of Snoop Dogg.
How Tupac and Snoop Dogg were related
Tupac and Snoop Dogg simultaneously worked on the label Death Row Records, which became one of the main forces of American hip-hop in the 1990s. Shakur joined the company in 1995 after his release from prison, and Snoop began working with its founders early in his career.
The most famous joint composition of the musicians was "2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted". It was included in Tupac's double album "All Eyez on Me", released in February 1996.
The song cemented the image of the two rappers as the main representatives of the West coast of the USA. The band also performed it together at a concert at the House of Blues in July 1996, one of Shakur's last recorded performances.
The relationship of the performers was not straightforward. Against the background of the confrontation of the rap scenes of the west and east coasts, disagreements arose between them. The filmmakers have not yet revealed the content of these conflicts and their place in the plot.
Tupac Shakur died in September 1996 at the age of 25. The rapper was injured during a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas, and six days later he died in hospital.
Who will play Snoop Dogg and his mother
The main role in the film was played by Jonathan Daviss, best known for his portrayal of Pope Hayward in the Netflix series Outer Banks. Daviss is supposed to show Snoop Dogg at an early stage of his career, from his youth in California's Long Beach to meeting Dr. Dre and the success of his first solo album. The full age range of the hero, which will cover the film, has not yet been specified.
Lauren London will play the role of Beverly Tate, the musician's mother. The actress is known for the films "Remorse without Borders" and "This stupid Love", as well as for the TV series "Players".
Tate led the church choir and had a significant influence on her son's attitude to music and religion. She died in October 2021. Subsequently, Snoop dedicated his second gospel album, Altar Call, to her.
The involvement of the character Beverly Tate indicates that the film will not be limited to the story of musical success and will touch on Snoop Dogg's childhood and family life. However, the length of London's role and the specific episodes with her character have not yet been revealed.
Who used to play Snoop Dogg and Tupac in movies
The story of Snoop Dogg has already partially appeared in the biographical drama "The Voice of the Streets" in 2015 about the group N.W.A. Lakit Stanfield played a young rapper in it, and Corey Hawkins played the role of Dr. Dre. For the first time, the new film will make Snoop himself the central character.
Tupac previously dedicated the painting "Tupac Shakur: Legend". Shakur was played by Demetrius Shipp Jr., and Jamal Woolard embodied the image of Notorius B.I. The film was released in 2017, on the day when Tupac could have turned 46 years old.
In "Snoop," Shakur's story will be shown through a relationship with the main character. Therefore, Kamron Jones will not have to retell the entire biography of the rapper, but reproduce the specific period of his work on Death Row Records and collaboration with Snoop Dogg.
