Spider-Man flew into space: What does the ending of the new superhero movie mean?
In the finale of Spider-Man: A New Day, Peter Parker finally gets a chance to bring back at least some of his old life, but the post-credits scene immediately changes the scale of the story. After it, a laconic inscription appears on the screen: "Spider-Man will return." About what the mysterious scene after the credits means, how Peter changed after "There is no Way Home" and what secrets the hero's new story hides — in the Izvestia material.
Why did Spider-Man end up in space (contains spoilers!)
In the center of the stage after the credits is an old computer application of Ned (Jacob Batalon), created to track the location of Spider-Man. First, the program reports that the hero is outside of New York. Then the map gradually expands: first to the whole country, then to the rest of the world, and finally beyond the borders of the Earth. In space, the system unexpectedly discovers Peter.
After that, the message "Spider-Man will be back" appears. At the same time, Marvel and Sony do not name the film in which the next appearance of the hero will take place. It is the lack of a specific name that makes the scene particularly important: it confirms the continuation of Peter's story, but deliberately leaves open the question of where exactly the audience will see him next.
One of the obvious options is Peter's participation in the future "Avengers". Deadline magazine examines the connection of the scene with the "Avengers: Judgment Day" and "The Avengers: Secret Wars", as both films should continue the large-scale history of the Marvel cinematic universe. However, the scene itself does not confirm this. It is even possible that the Spider-Man discovered in space is connected with the multiverse and it is not necessarily about Tom Holland's Parker.
Peter is no longer trying to get his old life back
The main action of "New Day" begins four years after the events of "No Way Home." After the spell of Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), the whole world has forgotten Peter Parker. As a result, he was left alone: M.J. and Ned no longer remember their friend, and Peter himself continues to protect New York, fully devoting himself to the life of Spider-Man. This is how Marvel describes the new story.
Loneliness becomes more than just an emotional problem for the hero. As the story progresses, his abilities begin to change.: Peter develops an organic web, and with it, outbursts of aggression that he has difficulty controlling. The pressure is also increasing due to meetings with former loved ones who are nearby, but do not actually know him.
At the same time, Peter finds himself embroiled in a story of attacks on employees of the Damage Control Department. Together with Elena Belova (Florence Pugh), he tries to find out who is behind what is happening. It gradually becomes clear that Sadie Sink's character Jean Grey is behind the attacks.
Who is Jean Grey and what does the Hulk have to do with it?
The reveal of Sink's character becomes one of the biggest spoilers of the "New Day." Her heroine was Jean Grey, a representative of the X—Men. She is able to control other people's minds and use their bodies, and later demonstrates telekinesis. Her actions are not just related to the desire to cause harm: Jean is trying to get to the head of the Damage Control Department, Bill Metzger (Tramell Tillman).
The reason for her rage is related to her sister Sarah: Metzger and his organization conducted experiments on her, and Jean eventually learns that it was the actions of the Department that led to the death of her sister. After that, the conflict ceases to be an ordinary confrontation between a superhero and a villain: Peter gradually understands Jean's motives and tries to stop her without destroying her.
At some point, Jin uses his powers against the Hulk and the Punisher. Peter manages to temporarily disable her powers using the same DNA inhibitor that he uses to control his own changes. But the situation is getting out of control: after Jean finds out the truth about Sarah, her abilities are dramatically enhanced, and she freezes New Yorkers in a significant area.
Why is the ending with M.J. more important than the post-credits scene?
At the same time, the film returns Peter to the main unhealed wound after "There is No Way Home" — his relationship with M.J. (Zendaya). She still doesn't remember him, but after meeting Jean, she gets the opportunity to learn more about her own past. As a result, M.J. realizes that there was a spell that erased Peter's memories. However, this is not enough to restore her former feelings: she bluntly tells him that she cannot love him again.
With Ned, everything happens differently. M.J. is actually pushing Peter to tell his best friend the truth. When she says Peter's name next to Ned, he realizes that Spider-Man's real name is related to his forgotten past. Later, Peter introduces himself to him without a mask.
But it's not the explanation that finally brings Ned's memory back. Peter and Ned are repeating their old handshake, which they used even before the spell erased their memories of each other. Thanks to the familiar movement, muscle memory is activated — at this moment he remembers Peter. His reaction becomes the emotional point of the whole film: after several years of loneliness, the hero finally returns at least one person from his former life.
And it is after that that the film dramatically changes its intonation. The story, which was almost entirely devoted to Peter's loneliness and an attempt to rebuild a ruined life, ends with a promise of a completely different scale: Spider-Man finds himself in space. Marvel has not yet explained exactly where the hero went, but the very inscription "Spider-Man will return" leaves the door open for Peter — now in a much larger story of the Marvel cinematic universe.
