Marvel Studio showed the first trailer of the movie "The Avengers: Judgment Day"
Marvel Studios has unveiled the first full trailer for the movie "The Avengers: Judgment Day" (Avengers: The Doomsday) is one of the most anticipated premieres of recent years. For the first time, the almost three—minute video allows a detailed look at Doctor Doom performed by Robert Downey Jr., shows the unification of several generations of superheroes at once and hints at a large-scale conflict that will be the culmination of the current Saga of the multiverse. For Marvel, this film is of particular importance: after the mixed reception of recent projects, the studio expects to regain the trust of the audience and once again gather an audience in cinemas comparable to the era of "Avengers: Endgame". What exactly was shown in the trailer, why the plot of the film begins immediately after several key projects of the cinematic universe and what questions he left unanswered — in the Izvestia material.
What was shown in the first trailer and after which events the story begins
The first full-fledged trailer for "Avengers: Judgment Day" practically does not reveal the details of the plot, but sets the main direction of the future film. Marvel is betting not on a single hero, but on a sense of a large-scale crisis that will affect several worlds at once. Familiar characters from different generations of the cinematic universe appear in the video, and the main event is a full—fledged presentation of Doctor Doom, the new central antagonist of the Marvel cinematic universe. It is around him, apparently, that the story of the film will be built.
One of the most discussed moments of the trailer was the appearance of Robert Downey Jr. For almost 20 years, the actor has been associated exclusively with Tony Stark (Iron Man), the character from whom the modern Marvel cinematic universe actually began. Now he returns to the franchise in a completely different role — Victor von Doom, better known as Doctor Doom. For comic book fans, this character has long been considered one of Marvel's most complex and charismatic villains, and many have been expecting his film debut ever since Disney bought 20th Century Fox studios.
Who else will play in the movie "The Avengers: Judgment Day"
At the same time, the trailer shows that the action of the film begins after several important events of the last phases of the Marvel cinematic universe. By this point, the original Avengers team had long since disbanded, and the new heroes had not yet become a full-fledged replacement for their predecessors. In parallel, the consequences of the multiverse crisis continue, the development of which viewers watched in the TV series "Loki", "What if...", as well as in the films "Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness" and "Spider-Man: No Way Home". Now it is the instability of multiple realities that is becoming the main threat to the entire cinematic universe.
Chronologically, "Doomsday" continues the events of several projects of the sixth phase of Marvel. The film "Fantastic Four: First Steps" will be of key importance, where viewers will be introduced to a new version of Reed Richards' family. In addition, the story develops after "Thunderbolts *", the TV series "Ironheart", the second season of "Loki" and "Daredevil: Born Again". That is why, at the beginning of the film, the universe finds itself in an unusual situation: there are more famous heroes than ever, but there is still no unified team capable of countering the new threat.
Another feature of the trailer is that Marvel deliberately hides a significant part of the cast. Despite numerous rumors, the video only briefly shows some of the participants in the future crossover, while other characters generally remain behind the scenes. At the same time, the studio has already confirmed that the film will feature characters from the main Marvel cinematic universe, the new Fantastic Four and the heroes of the X-Men franchise. It is this combination that makes "Judgment Day" the studio's largest crossover since "Avengers: Endgame" and the main event of the current Multiverse Saga. The world premiere of the film is scheduled for December 18 this year.
Who is Doctor Doom and why is he called Marvel's greatest villain?
Although Doctor Doom will be a new character in the Marvel cinematic universe for some viewers, comic book fans have known him for over 60 years. Victor von Doom made his debut in the Fantastic Four series in 1962. The character was created by screenwriter Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, who called him one of the most difficult and multifaceted opponents in the history of publishing. Unlike many supervillains, Doom does not seek to destroy the world for the sake of chaos or personal gain. His main goal is to establish his own order, being convinced that he is the one who is able to save humanity better than others.
According to the plot of the comics, Victor von Doom was born in the fictional Eastern European country of Latveria. Even in his youth, he showed outstanding abilities in physics, engineering and robotics, but the desire to surpass everyone around him gradually turned into an obsession. After an unsuccessful scientific experiment, Doom suffered severe burns to his face and since then has practically not removed the metal mask, which has become one of the most recognizable details of his image. Over time, he not only mastered advanced technology, but also studied magic, making him considered one of the most dangerous opponents in the Marvel universe.
A special place in the story of Doctor Doom is occupied by his confrontation with Reed Richards, the leader of the Fantastic Four. Their conflict is based not only on the struggle between good and evil, but also on the rivalry between two outstanding scientists. In many plots, it is the desire to prove one's own intellectual superiority that becomes no less important to Doom than world domination. At the same time, in the comics, he repeatedly acted not only as an enemy, but also as a temporary ally of superheroes when it came to a more serious threat to humanity.
That's why many Marvel fans consider Victor von Doom to be one of the publishing house's most interesting antagonists. Over the years, he became the ruler of entire worlds, defeated the Avengers, stole the powers of cosmic entities, and even created his own version of reality during the events of the iconic Avengers: Secret Wars series. The appearance of such a character allows Marvel to raise the stakes significantly higher than was possible in the story of Kang, and at the same time directly link "Doomsday" with future "Secret Wars", which should complete the current Saga of the multiverse.
Why did Marvel Have to Completely Change its Plans after Kang
A few years ago, the main film of the sixth phase of the cinematic universe was not supposed to be "Doomsday" at all. At the San Diego Comic-Con festival in 2022, Marvel announced the movie "Avengers: The Kang Dynasty" (Avengers: The Kang Dynasty). It was assumed that it was Kang the Conqueror who would become the central antagonist of the new multiverse Saga — a kind of replacement for Thanos, around whom the development of events in the first three phases of the cinematic universe was based. However, these plans were not destined to be realized.
The turning point was the story of actor Jonathan Majors, who played the role of Kang. In December 2023, the court found him guilty of two counts of assault and harassment of an ex-girlfriend. Almost immediately after the verdict was announced, Marvel Studios announced the termination of cooperation with the actor. Although the studio has not officially commented on the character's fate, it has become obvious that the previous concept of the Multiverse Saga will have to be seriously revised.
As a result, Marvel decided not to look for a new performer for the role of Kang, but to completely change the direction of the franchise. Instead of "Kang Dynasty," the studio announced the movie "The Avengers.": Judgment Day", the main villain of which was Doctor Doom. For comic book fans, this choice seems quite logical: Victor von Doom is considered one of the most influential and dangerous opponents of the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and other Marvel heroes. However, another decision came as a surprise — to entrust this role to Robert Downey Jr., who for almost 20 years was the face of the cinematic universe in the image of Tony Stark.
The changes affected not only the cast. Along with the new name, Marvel brought back brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, the directors of Infinity War and Endgame, who brought the studio the biggest box office successes in history. The script is again being written by Stephen McFeely, who has worked on several key films in the cinematic universe. For Marvel, this is not just a personnel reshuffle: the studio is actually reassembling the team that created the most successful era of the cinematic universe.
This approach is also explained by the position of the franchise itself. After the release of "Avengers: Endgame," Marvel faced a series of ambiguously received projects. Although individual films — for example, "Spider-Man: No Way Home" or "Deadpool and Wolverine" — have become major hits, many other films and TV series have shown more modest results both at the box office and according to audience estimates. Against this background, "Judgment Day" becomes not just another Marvel film, but an attempt to re-unite disparate storylines and return the feeling of a large-scale event, which, according to many fans, the studio lacked after the completion of the Thanos story.
Will "Doomsday" be able to regain Marvel's leadership?
The main feature of "Avengers: Judgment Day" is that Marvel is once again betting on a large-scale crossover. If the first films of the cinematic universe gradually brought together Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and the Hulk, now the studio unites several franchises at once, which until recently existed separately from each other. The main MCU characters, the new Fantastic Four, the characters of the X-Men franchise, as well as other participants in the Multiverse Saga should meet in one film. In fact, this is Marvel's most ambitious project since Avengers: Endgame.
At the same time, "Judgment Day" is not intended as an independent story, but as the first part of the finale of the current Saga of the multiverse. It has already been confirmed that its events will directly lead to the movie "Avengers: Secret Wars", which is due to be released a year later. This particular picture, according to Marvel Studios, will become an analogue of the "Finale" for a new generation of superheroes — with a large-scale clash of worlds, numerous returns of familiar characters and, probably, another reboot of the cinematic universe.
The official synopsis of the movie "The Avengers: Judgment Day"
Beloved characters from three different universes will find themselves on a deadly collision course and face an existential threat unlike anything they have ever faced.
The released trailer shows that the studio is deliberately betting on several factors that have already brought it success once. This is the return of the Russo brothers, the participation of Robert Downey Jr., the appearance of the iconic villain Doctor Doom and the unification of characters from different parts of the superhero franchise. At the same time, Marvel is trying to keep the intrigue alive: many key storylines are not revealed in the video, and some characters whose participation has long been discussed in the media and among fans have not yet appeared on the screen. Judging by the audience's reaction, it was this understatement that became one of the main reasons for the heated discussion of the trailer in the first hours after its publication.
For Marvel itself, the stakes are now much higher than the success of a single movie. After the end of the Infinity Saga, the studio faced a decline in interest in some of its projects, and viewers increasingly talked about an overabundance of series and the fragmentation of new storylines. "Judgment Day" should not only tell a new story, but also reassure the audience that Marvel films remain part of a larger narrative that is worth following. If it succeeds, the studio will be able to regain its status as the undisputed leader of superhero cinema. If not, the era that began almost twenty years ago with the release of the first Iron Man may finally give way to new franchises.
