- The sun repeated the record of the 21st century in the number of flares per day
On Saturday, November 7, scientists recorded 29 solar flares, which repeated the record of the 21st century. This was announced on November 8 at the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Institute of Space Research (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
"29 solar flares were officially registered on the Sun yesterday, November 7, taking into account the day Moscow time. <...> This is a repeat of the record since at least 2000. Prior to that, exactly the same number of outbreaks, 29, were recorded on May 5, 2022 and December 10, 2024," the laboratory said in a statement on its Telegram channel.
According to the IKI RAS, all the flares occurred in one group of spots numbered 4566, located in the center of the solar disk. Earlier, in May 2022, 29 outbreaks produced two active centers, and in December 2024, five groups at once. All events were classified in categories C and M.
It is specified that the Sun has not yet crossed the threshold of 30 flashes in Moscow time in the 21st century, however, if we switch from Moscow to universal time, then this record was already set on May 5, 2022 — then 32 events were registered in world time.
A Class M flare occurred in the Sun on Saturday, which lasted 22 minutes. According to experts, an increase in activity occurred in the area of sunspots numbered 4566. The day before, this group occupied an area of about 240 million parts of the solar hemisphere and had a complex magnetic structure. On the same day, the IKI RAS reported that 35 class C and higher flares were registered in the Sun in less than two days, while the intensity of solar activity continues to increase rapidly.
