The veterinarian named the non-obvious autumn dangers for domestic cats
With the onset of cold weather, some changes in everyday life can create additional risks for domestic cats. Anton Tikhonenkov, a veterinarian and expert at Valta Pet Products, told about this on November 8.
During the heating season, cats often spend more time near batteries and heaters, but prolonged exposure to hot surfaces can cause burns, especially in hairless breeds. Portable heaters are also dangerous: a pet can accidentally knock them over or chew through the wire. Therefore, it is not necessary to leave heaters unattended, and it is better for a cat to organize a cozy place away from sources of strong heat.
The expert clarified that in autumn, windows are often left in vertical opening mode to ventilate rooms, but this design is dangerous for cats. Trying to get out, the pet may get stuck in the gap. Compression of the chest or abdomen can cause circulatory disorders, injury to internal organs, and even lead to suffocation.
"If a cat is trapped in a window opening, it must be shown to a veterinarian after it is released, even if there are no visible injuries. Special protective grilles should be installed for safe ventilation, and a regular mosquito net is not suitable.: It is not designed for the weight of an animal," Tikhonenkov told Gazeta.Ru».
According to the veterinarian, with the onset of cold weather, moth repellents may appear in closets and among winter clothes, posing a danger to domestic cats. Drugs with naphthalene and paradichlorobenzene pose a particular threat: if ingested, they can cause vomiting, weakness, disruption of the nervous system and damage to blood cells. Such substances should be kept out of the reach of pets. If a cat accidentally swallows a moth repellent, it is necessary to contact a veterinarian immediately, taking its packaging with you.
It is specified that with the onset of cold weather, rodents more often seek shelter in basements, houses and outbuildings. To combat them, poisonous baits are often used, which can also be dangerous for domestic cats. At the slightest suspicion of a pet's contact with toxic substances, it is necessary to immediately take it to the veterinarian, Tikhonenkov added.
Olesya Umerenkova, an expert on the breeding and socialization of American bullies, the founder of a private kennel, said on November 2 that dogs can hide pain and ill-health, so it is important for owners to closely monitor their behavior. According to the expert, even with proper care, dogs can develop various diseases with age. Therefore, animals should be regularly shown to a veterinarian and preventive examinations should be carried out, including ultrasound of internal organs. In older males, it is also recommended to check the prostate gland.
