Chronic lack of sleep and lack of recovery after physical exertion can be a serious obstacle to weight loss. Alexander Farmanov, an endocrinologist at Olympus Clinic MARS, announced this on November 7.

"To maintain a full night's sleep, it is important not only to allocate enough time to rest, but also to pay attention to the conditions in the bedroom. Light from the window, extraneous sounds, stuffiness or an uncomfortable bed can interfere with relaxation and worsen the quality of rest," the specialist said in an interview with Gazeta.Ru».

According to Farmanov, sleep deficiency directly affects the hormones ghrelin and leptin, which are responsible for hunger and satiety. A violation of this regulation leads to the fact that the brain receives false signals about lack of energy. As a result, a person begins to snack more often, even if they follow the usual menu.

In addition, lack of sleep also changes taste preferences: after a short night, the body more often requires sweet, flour, and high-calorie foods. The doctor also pointed out that sleep problems negatively affect the results of training, as chronic fatigue reduces insulin sensitivity and slows down recovery.

ORMATEK experts added that even bedding affects sleep quality. Fabrics that are poorly permeable to air and moisture can cause a stuffy feeling and lead to regular nighttime awakenings.

An adult requires an average of seven to nine hours of sleep per night. The endocrinologist recalled that quality rest is one of the foundations of weight control along with proper nutrition and physical activity. If problems with falling asleep persist for a long time, it is recommended to seek help from a specialist.

Clinical psychologist Kristina Morozova told Izvestia on November 3 that excessive desire to improve sleep causes orthosomnia, a disorder characterized by an obsessive desire to achieve ideal performance. Such people pay attention to the numbers: the total duration of sleep, the time of falling asleep, the number and duration of awakenings. However, the indicators in the application do not give a complete picture, and a person may begin to focus on them more than on their own well-being, which can become a problem.
