- Slovakia has announced its refusal to pay for the non-acceptance of migrants under EU quotas
Slovakia will not pay for refusing to accept migrants according to the quotas of the European Union (EU) and insists on the right to decide for themselves who will live and work in the country. This was announced on November 6 by the Slovak Interior Ministry.
"Slovakia will not pay for refusing to accept illegal migrants based on European quotas. We expect the European Union to provide security and security support for the Union's external borders, rather than demanding payments for illegal migrants whom we have not accepted. We insist on our sovereign right to decide for ourselves who will live and work in Slovakia," the statement on the website of the country's internal political department says.
The Interior Ministry stressed that Slovakia did not support migration and voted against the adjustment of the mechanism of mandatory solidarity. According to the agency, under this mechanism, the country has not paid a cent from the state budget and has not accepted a single displaced migrant.
At the same time, Bratislava asked the European Commission (EC) to exempt it from the solidarity contribution for 2026, justifying this with assistance to Ukrainian refugees and the migration burden of previous years, but the EC refused the request.
Bild newspaper reported on September 27 that the EU plans to develop a unified mechanism to combat the influx of migrants amid the migration crisis in Ceuta. It was clarified that the plan was developed by 18 Ministers of Internal Affairs and Migration of the EU countries and will include three points. The first paragraph contains the introduction of uniform rules, according to which "exceptional situations on the external borders of the EU must be clearly defined and established."
