The American accused Open AI of helping his wife in planning his poisoning
American James Gates sued the artificial intelligence (AI) company Open AI, the man claims that the ChatGPT neural network helped his wife plan his poisoning. This was reported by Bloomberg on November 5.
"According to the case file, Gates began to suspect his wife Cheryl of attempted poisoning after he found a list of substances and their dosages marked as "lethal." The note also contained instructions: "clear all correspondence" and "log out of ChatGPT," the publication says.
The American claims that his wife often used artificial intelligence (AI) to solve household and work issues, and then began to "pour out feelings to the chatbot" about marriage when the couple discussed divorce. The prosecution believes that ChatGPT fueled Cheryl's growing distrust and her delusions that her husband was watching her and planned to leave her and the children with nothing.
Cheryl then asked the AI if one of the plants was poisonous. At the same time, the woman wrote to the chatbot that she was trying to protect herself: allegedly, her husband could at any moment try to feed her the leaves unnoticed.
Gates went to the police in 2025. According to the man's complaint, he experienced "severe nervousness, severe abdominal pain, and severe weakness." In the same year, Cheryl Gates was charged, but the prosecutor's office dropped the case, citing insufficient evidence.
Open AI denies the direct responsibility of chatbots for crimes committed by users.
"Safety is our top priority. We have blocked this user and provided information to law enforcement agencies as part of the investigation of this case," the agency quotes the company's statement.
The New York Times reported on October 27 that a 31-year-old woman in the United States, Bowen Wang, who suffered from epilepsy, died after she lowered the dosage of an anticonvulsant drug, following the recommendations of the ChatGPT. In November, the woman's relatives filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, claiming that the chatbot gave advice without warning about the need to see a doctor. Wang's parents are demanding damages, as well as seeking a ban on providing OpenAI with medical advice without a license.
