AP announced the beginning of an investigation into charges against the president in the Ueno Bank case.

Paraguay has launched an investigation into charges against President Santiago Pena in the case of the collapse of the Ueno bank. This was reported on November 6 by the Associated Press (AP) with reference to relevant documents.

"The President of Paraguay, Santiago Pena, was under investigation in connection with the collapse of a large digital bank. <...> On Friday, the head of state will have to defend himself in the Senate, where the issue of his possible removal from office will be considered," the publication says.

According to the agency, Prosecutor General Emiliano Rolon Fernandez ordered three criminal investigations into the Ueno Bank case, including charges against Pena and a number of current and former officials. The investigation will examine the authorities' supervision of the bank, their actions during its collapse and the placement of public funds in it. A group of prosecutors will check the statements received from lawmakers and Economy Minister Alberto Lovera regarding the president and other officials.

It is clarified that the crisis at Ueno Bank has turned even his long-ruling Colorado party against Pena. The president offered to resign, after which the lower house unanimously voted for impeachment.

Both chambers refused to accept the resignation, and the Senate decided to continue the removal process. Opposition senators are demanding Pena's removal, arguing that voluntary resignation would preserve his right to become a senator for life with legal protection that could prevent criminal prosecution.

Pena announced his resignation on November 5 after the collapse of Ueno Bank. It was clarified that the decision to resign was made after the Central Bank of Paraguay ordered to intervene in the work of Ueno Bank. In addition, a few hours before Pena's statement, the opposition presented an accusation that became the basis for the start of impeachment proceedings.
