The wholesale price of Atlantic herring has risen by more than 40 over the year.%

The average wholesale price of Atlantic herring in northwestern Russia reached 190 rubles per 1 kg by the beginning of this month. This is 40.7% more than a year earlier and 37.7% higher than at the beginning of 2026. Such data is evidenced from the monitoring of FSUE "Natsrybresurs".

As Kommersant found out, a noticeable rise in prices began in September, whereas previously prices remained stable. Rosrybolovstvo explained to the newspaper that the cost depends on seasonality, supply, demand and production and processing costs. According to the Fish Union, by November 1, 16.3 thousand tons of herring were caught in the Western Basin, which is 19.3% less than last year's volume.

The Association of Shipowners of the fishing fleet linked the difficulties of fishing with foreign policy restrictions. Due to the sanctions, some Russian vessels do not produce Atlantic herring in the fishing zones of the North Atlantic countries. The rest of the fleet faces restrictions on unloading the catch and resupply in the mining areas. Additional pressure is exerted by the growing expenses of fishermen on salaries, ship construction and the development of coastal infrastructure.

Among the reasons for the price increase, experts from Natsrybresurs also highlight the competition of supplies to the domestic market and abroad. According to calculations by the analytical center of the Fish Union based on data from foreign customs services, in January–September, exports of frozen herring increased by 19% year-on-year and amounted to 229 thousand tons.

The main buyers remain China, South Korea and Japan, as well as Nigeria, Togo, Ghana, Benin and Cameroon. At the same time, participants in the fish market interviewed by the newspaper clarified that the increase in exports is mainly provided by Pacific herring, which complementsГазета.Ru ".

At the same time, in August, the president of the All-Russian Association of Fish Producers, German Zverev, noted that herring was one of the three most affordable fish species in Russia. According to him, a noticeable decrease in the cost of herring began last year. In 2025, Pacific herring became one of the leaders in reducing the price of fish products: the cost of it decreased by about 30%.
