The updated NATO defense strategy allows for strikes against targets in Russia. This was reported on November 3 by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

"The conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East are forcing NATO to rethink its approaches to countering an [allegedly] possible Russian attack, including abandoning previous restrictions and launching strikes deep into Russian territory," the publication says.

According to the publication, in June, high-ranking military and officials of the alliance countries gathered for the first-ever NATO symposium on "Deep Strike Symposium". The new concept implies not only the destruction of units near the border, but also the defeat of military bases, supply depots and industrial facilities in the deep rear — on the territory of Russia itself.

It is specified that the use of nuclear weapons is not included in this strategy. A key element of the plan is high—precision long-range weapons, both expensive designs and more affordable systems.

The commander-in-chief of the alliance's Joint Armed Forces in Europe, Alexus Grinkevich, said on October 16 that every commander of NATO forces in Europe had his own theory of victory over Russia, so the development of such a plan is common practice. Grinkevich explained that the hypothetical strategy includes three stages: blocking, deterring and defeating the enemy.
