- Fico supported the CAS decision and questioned the value of hockey gold without Russia.
The decision to return Russian hockey players to international competitions deserves support, and the value of a gold medal is lost without the participation of Russian hockey players. This was announced on October 31 by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
"What is the value of a gold medal if you don't have to beat Russian hockey players who are certainly among the best in the world on the way to it?" — his words are conveyed by the publication Hlavný denník.
Fico stressed that sports should not be dragged into politics, and the decision to return Russian hockey players to international competitions is the right one.
On October 30, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ordered the IIHF to allow Russian national teams to participate in international competitions. In turn, the IIHF clarified that it will begin evaluating the measures necessary for the return of the Russian national teams to participate in international competitions. Despite disagreeing with the court's position, the organization pledged to "urgently assess the steps and time" required to comply with the court's order.
After the announcement of the decision, the Kontinental Hockey League congratulated the Russian Hockey Federation and the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation on their victory in bringing the country back to the world stage. According to representatives of the league, this decision will increase the motivation of players and coaches, as well as allow world hockey to return to its usual mode of operation.
