A Moscow court has arrested Artur Artemenko, former Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), in absentia. According to the investigation, according to his instructions, 222 people were killed and injured as a result of the shelling of Donbass in 2017-2019, according to court materials.

Artemenko was charged under Part 1 of Article 356 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Use of prohibited means and methods of warfare"), RIA Novosti reported, having studied the case materials.

According to the case file, from February 2017 to July 2019, Artemenko served as Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. During this period, he gave orders to the Ukrainian military about the shelling of the territory of Donbass.

According to investigators, 222 people, including 17 children, were killed and injured as a result of these actions.

A message about Artemenko's announcement on the federal wanted list under a criminal article appeared in the database of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation in November last year. It was noted at the time that the basis was an article of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, but the article number was not specified.
