The illness of a pet can be considered as a valid reason for not showing up for work. This was announced on October 31 by Evgeny Masharov, Deputy Chairman of the Commission of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation for public control and handling of citizens' appeals.

"The illness of a pet can be considered as a valid reason for an employer," he said in an interview with TASS.

Masharov explained that the Labor Code of the Russian Federation does not have a clear list of valid reasons for absenteeism, so in each situation, the head of the company independently assesses the seriousness of the circumstances. At the same time, the expert recalled that the very concept of force majeure is enshrined in the Civil Code, not in the Labor Code.

In practice, in the framework of labor disputes, force majeure refers to objective, extraordinary and unavoidable situations that physically prevented a person from going to work. In addition to problems with animals, such cases may include an accident or a breakdown of transport.

Alexander Yuzhalin, head of the legal practice at SuperJob, announced on September 7 that there would be no punishment for being late for work if the reason for the employee's absence at the beginning of the working day was recognized as valid. The expert clarified that valid reasons include being late, previously agreed with the employer, as well as fulfilling government or other obligations.
