Russian Railways will change the rules for returning train tickets from December 1
Starting from December 1, 2026, the procedure for refunding tickets for long-distance trains will change in Russia: the amount of the fee will depend on how much time is left before the train departs. It will range from 1% to 10% of the tariff, Russian Railways (RZD) recalled.
According to the new scale, if the ticket is returned 45 days or more before departure, the passenger will pay 1% of the fare. If there are from 30 to 44 days left before the trip, the fee will be 3%, from 10 to 29 days — 5%, and for nine days or less — 10%.
The company explained that the retention amount will increase as the departure date approaches. Currently, when returning a ticket, a fixed fee of 3.7 rubles is charged. It will remain in effect until November 30, 2026 inclusive.
According to Russian Railways, the new system will help reduce the number of mass returns immediately before the departure of trains. Due to this, other passengers who plan trips in advance will be able to purchase the vacant seats.
The progressive scale will only apply to tickets purchased starting from December 1, 2026.
Starting from February 1, 2027, the Federal Passenger Company (FPC) will introduce new rules for transporting pets accompanied by their owners on long-distance trains, the company warned on October 22. The company attributed the changes to the increased complaints about the transportation of animals in places not intended for this purpose.
