Russian electronic warfare (EW) systems are superior to European ones, in particular, German ones. This was stated on October 30 by the head of the cyber forces of the Bundeswehr, Vice Admiral Thomas Daum, in an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper.

"Over the past 15-20 years, the Russians have invested huge amounts of money in electronic warfare (EW) and have increased their potential. <...> we certainly cannot boast of such capabilities," he stated.

According to him, the advantage of the Russian side in this area is huge at the moment. The Vice Admiral stressed that the German armed forces began to rebuild only in 2022. He clarified that funds for operational measures to reduce the gap appeared only in 2025 after the easing of the "debt brake" — a legislative rule limiting the German budget deficit.

Daum noted that the Bundeswehr currently does not have the necessary equipment to achieve parity with Russia. According to him, the European and American industries can only provide prototypes of new systems so far. At the same time, the German army needs to switch to large-scale production to fully re-equip its troops, and there is still a lot of work to be done along the way, he said.

On September 30, Die Welt newspaper learned that German reservists faced a serious shortage of modern equipment and equipment during military exercises. It was clarified that those involved in the events had to perform tasks at landfills, the infrastructure of which had not changed for decades. The main goal of the command was to work out the protection of Germany and its NATO partners. In the course of achieving it, the military found themselves short of body armor and time to organize.
