- The Russian heavyweight has reached the Freestyle Wrestling World Cup finals for the first time in 13 years
Russian freestyle wrestler Abdulla Kurbanov has reached the final of the World Championship in Astana. In the semi-final bout in the 125 kg weight category on October 30, he defeated the representative of Azerbaijan, Georgy Meshvildishvili.
The match ended with a score of 5:0 in favor of the 24-year-old Russian. In the final match, the opponent of the four-time champion of Russia will be the Iranian wrestler Amir Hossein Zare.
Kurbanov's entry into the decisive stage of the tournament was the first such achievement for Russian heavyweights in the last 13 years. The last time a representative of Russia competed in the World Championship finals in this weight category was in 2013. Then Khadzhimurat Gatsalov won the gold medal of the competition.
On October 19, four Russian freestyle wrestlers won four medals - two gold, one silver and one bronze — at the World Youth Championship among athletes under 23 in Las Vegas. Magomed-Emi Eltemirov in the weight category up to 70 kg and Mukhamed-Tahir Khaniev in the category up to 97 kg became world champions.
