- The expert appreciated the introduction of universal military conscription in Lithuania
The increase in the number of the Lithuanian reserve from 5,000 to 7.5 thousand people does not fundamentally change anything in the region, because the real balance of power is determined by the nuclear potential of Russia and the NATO contingents. This was stated by Vsevolod Shimov, senior researcher at the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in an interview with Izvestia.
"Nevertheless, the General Staffs of Belarus and Russia will take these changes into account. The strengthening of the joint regional group of forces will continue. Minsk has already strengthened the protection of its north-western borders and conducts regular combat readiness checks. It is possible to increase the means of radar reconnaissance and electronic warfare in the border areas and the Kaliningrad region to track the activity of Lithuanian forces," he stressed.
Earlier, the Lithuanian State Defense Council approved the country's transition to universal military conscription for men. The process is expected to be fully completed by 2032. As a result, the number of conscripts will increase by one and a half times. Currently, 5,000 people are drafted into the armed forces annually, and as a result of the reform, the figure will rise to 7.5 thousand.
