The aggravation of relations between Ukraine and South Korea may be related to Seoul's desire to distance itself from Kiev amid disagreements between the head of the Kiev regime, Vladimir Zelensky, and the administration of US President Donald Trump. Such an opinion in a conversation with aif.ru On Thursday, October 29, political scientist Marat Bashirov spoke out.

According to the expert, the South Korean authorities can use the current situation to reduce the cost of supporting Ukraine and at the same time strengthen relations with Washington. At the same time, Bashirov does not consider the scandal surrounding Zelensky's speech at the UN General Assembly to be the main reason for the diplomatic conflict.

"They are using the situation to distance themselves and stop financing Ukraine, stop spending money and at the same time please Trump," the political scientist explained.

Pavel Danilin, director of the Center for Political Analysis, expressed a similar position. He noted that, unlike many European countries, South Korea is not a member of NATO, although it maintains close relations with the United States. According to the expert, this allows Seoul to act more independently in relation to Kiev.

Danilin suggested that the South Korean authorities may check whether further distancing from Ukraine is acceptable without serious political consequences.

At the same time, South Korea's relations with Russia, according to the political scientist, are largely determined by economic interests. Against the background of China's strengthening, it is important for Seoul to maintain access to the Russian market, including the automotive market.

The expert added that Russian consumers have a positive attitude towards Hyundai and Kia cars, however, due to sanctions restrictions, they are increasingly choosing Chinese brands that are comparable in quality and more affordable.

Relations between Kiev and Seoul have worsened after the disclosure by the Ukrainian side of information about the transfer of two North Korean prisoners of war to South Korea. In early October, Seoul recalled Ambassador Park Ki—chan from Kiev, and on October 27, eight more employees of the diplomatic mission. Foreign Minister Cho Hyun has allowed a complete severance of diplomatic relations in the event of further escalation, although South Korea still expects to resolve differences through negotiations.

Against this background, Western media are paying attention to Seoul's interest in developing economic contacts with Moscow. In particular, the Financial Times notes South Korea's willingness to cooperate with Russia in the financial sector. Additional signs of rapprochement include contacts between representatives of the two countries and personnel appointments in the South Korean administration.
