It's explosive: Tsar Bomba will help scientists create new generation reactors
Exactly 65 years ago, the USSR tested the most powerful explosive device in the history of mankind, the Tsar Bomba, with a capacity of 50 million tons of TNT. The developments used in its creation formed the basis of promising thermonuclear reactors, which in the future can provide mankind with almost inexhaustible reserves of energy. Paradoxically, the massive explosion was one of the first steps towards limiting the arms race, experts said. Subsequently, an agreement on the limitation of nuclear tests was signed. Today, the achievements of Soviet physicists can contribute to the success of the international mega-science project ITER, which unites more than 30 countries.
The significance of the "Tsar Bomba" for modernity
The scientific data obtained during the work on the Tsar Bomba formed the basis of research on the creation of new-generation thermonuclear reactors, which are considered one of the promising areas of energy of the future. Vladimir Reshetov, Professor of the Department of Electronic Measuring Systems at the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, told Izvestia about this.
— Almost all the technologies created during the nuclear arms race have found peaceful applications. And, perhaps, one of the most striking results of the Tsar Bomba test will be future thermonuclear reactors based on nuclear technologies," the scientist believes.
On October 30, 1961, the AN602 explosive device, better known as the Tsar Bomba or Kuzkin's Mother, was tested at the Sukhoi Nos nuclear test site on Novaya Zemlya. The bomb was dropped from a Tu-95 aircraft. The explosion power reached 58.6 megatons of TNT, making it the most destructive weapon in human history.
"I want to say that we are also testing new nuclear weapons very successfully. We will complete these tests soon. Obviously, at the end of October. In conclusion, we will probably detonate a hydrogen bomb with a capacity of 50 million tons of TNT. We said that we have a bomb of 100 million tons of TNT. And that's right. But we will not detonate such a bomb, because if we detonate it even in the most remote places, then we can break our windows," Nikita Khrushchev told Soviet citizens at the XXII Congress of the Communist Party, whose report was published on the pages of Izvestia.
Indeed, the planned capacity of the AN602 was 100 Mt, but it was halved for safety reasons. To do this, the fourth stage, which was in the original plans, was removed — a shell made of ordinary natural uranium.
— This test turned out to be one of the cleanest in terms of radioactive contamination of the area. Two hours later, the military could be in the area of the epicenter, where the radiation level was only 1 mpg / hour — about the same as in the cabin at an altitude of 10 km. The explosion occurred in the air, and the resulting fireball with a diameter of 9 km only slightly touched the earth's surface, which minimized the radiation effects," explained Vladimir Reshetov.
The AN602 became a clear confirmation of the possibility of creating nuclear charges of almost any capacity. According to one version, both in the USSR and in the USA, design and survey work was carried out to create a charge with a capacity of 1 Gt. The results were encouraging, but the total mass of the device exceeded 100 tons, and there was no suitable carrier for such a bomb at that time, the scientist added.
The United States mass-produced heavy-duty bombs for 9, 15, 19 and 25 Mt, as well as 9 Mt missile warheads. However, as the accuracy of ballistic missiles has improved, the need for super-powerful charges has decreased.
The energy of tomorrow
Thermonuclear reactors with nuclear technologies are power plants that combine two processes: thermonuclear fusion and nuclear fission. In the future, they will provide more energy than traditional nuclear reactors and installations. In addition, such systems can be safer and will allow the use of a wider range of fuels.
Such installations are currently being actively developed in Russia. The research results of the international project to create an experimental thermonuclear reactor ITER can also be useful for the development of hybrid technologies.
— This is the only prospect to make ITER workable. Currently, there is not enough fuel for it, but it will become economically viable when combined with nuclear technologies. They will make it possible to produce tritium, which is necessary for a thermonuclear reactor. Thus, fission and fusion reactions in harmonious unity will provide us with energy for the next tens of thousands of years," said Vladimir Reshetov.
The construction of the ITER began in 2010 in France with the participation of Russia, the United States, the European Union, India, China and other countries. The reactor is scheduled to be fully operational in 2035.
Computing power was poorly developed in the 1960s, so studying the Tsar Bomba explosion itself and its consequences in practice gave a powerful scientific impetus to the development of the nuclear industry, according to military expert Yuri Lyamin.
— Despite the colossal cost of producing even one such bomb, our scientists have completely new physical data in their hands, which have benefited the study of the process of creating thermonuclear weapons and their capabilities. There were a lot of theoretical developments that were tested in practice," he said.
The test of such a powerful device confirmed the correctness of the scientists' calculations. This opened the way to the creation of more compact and practical nuclear weapons, and also allowed us to study the consequences of an explosion using a specific example — the level of radioactive contamination, the affected areas and the scale of destruction. The data obtained is still valuable, including for RCBZ units, since there have been no more tests of comparable capacity, the expert concluded.
The importance of trials for international relations
Two authentic Tsar Bomba buildings have survived to this day. One is in the Snezhinsk Museum, the other is in the Nuclear Weapons Museum in Sarov. This was reported to Izvestia by the press service of the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Technical Physics, where these products were created.
— The exhibit is used for demonstration purposes only. The weapon, developed 65 years ago, gave an impetus to the development of new physical principles. Today, the weapon is completely different. The superbomb test was of crucial political importance — achieving parity with the United States ended the mutual arms race," the institute's press service said.
On August 6, 1963, in Moscow, at the initiative of the USSR, the United States and Great Britain, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons Tests in Three Environments was signed — the atmosphere, Outer Space and underwater. This was the first step towards a complete ban on nuclear testing, including underground testing. The relevant agreement was adopted in 1996.
The creation and successful testing of the thermonuclear Tsar Bomba strengthened the country's sovereignty and turned the USSR into a global superpower, Kirill Koktysh, Doctor of Political Sciences, professor of the MGIMO Department of Political Theory, told Izvestia. In his opinion, the status of a great power can be assessed by various parameters, but it was this project that became the frontier that finally consolidated the country's new weight and influence on the world stage. Nuclear weapons continue to play this role today.
The Fundamentals of State Policy in the field of Nuclear Deterrence, approved in November 2024, emphasize that nuclear weapons "guarantee the protection of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the state, deterrence of a potential enemy from aggression." The document calls nuclear weapons a means of deterrence, and their use is an extreme and forced measure.
Today, there is a deep crisis in the field of international security: there are practically no previous mechanisms that mitigated strategic rivalry. On February 5, 2026, the Strategic Offensive Arms Treaty expired. At the same time, Russia has repeatedly stated its willingness in principle to discuss the extension of the agreement or the development of a new arms control format.
