American investigators have confirmed the involvement of serial killer Ted Bundy in the death of 17-year-old Melissa Ann Smith, whose body was found in Utah in 1974. The case was solved thanks to the results of a DNA examination, CNN reported on October 27.

The completion of the investigation was announced by Summit County Prosecutor Margaret Olson. According to her, the genetic evidence is consistent with the circumstances of the crime, the typical motives and method of action for Bundy. Besides, he had the opportunity to commit murder.

The investigation progressed after investigators matched DNA from the Smith case with materials about the murder of Laura Ann Aim— another victim of Bundy. His involvement in her death was confirmed in April in Utah County. Local police Sergeant Mike Reynolds said that when examining Smith's body, they found biological traces, the genetic profile of which coincided with the profile of the killer with a high degree of similarity.

Law enforcement officers tried to contact the next of kin of the deceased, but it turned out that none of them lived in the area anymore.

Bundy was electrocuted in Florida in 1989. He was sentenced to death for the murder of two women at the Chi Omega Women's home at Florida State University. Shortly before his execution, he confessed to other crimes, some of which had previously remained unknown to the police. However, not all of his confessions could be confirmed.

According to the investigation, in the 1970s, Bundy killed at least 30 women and girls. The development of DNA analysis methods makes it possible to establish his involvement in new crimes even decades after his death.

On October 27, a man suspected of murdering 38 people and cannibalism was detained in Uganda. The detainee named Muyurisi Moses, as noted by The Daily Mail, is considered the worst serial killer and cannibal in Ugandan history. He is suspected of killing and eating 38 people in Masaku, Ibandu and Kazo in 2010-2025. According to the newspaper, the man broke into the homes of entire families, drilled through walls and killed people with a machete.
