Tokayev called for the construction of the Balkhash NPP to begin as early as 2027
President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on Wednesday, October 28, took the initiative to begin construction of two new nuclear power plants (NPP), including Balkhash, in the country as early as 2027.
"In addition, it is necessary to sign an agreement on comprehensive cooperation to accelerate the start of construction of the Moinkum NPP," Tokayev said, his words are reported by Sputnik Kazakhstan.
The president also allowed the creation of a strategic uranium reserve, which will ensure the operation of nuclear power plants for 100 years.
In addition, Tokayev instructed to work out the issue of attracting Russian and Chinese companies to the organization of high-tech industries, as well as the participation of foreign partners in the training of Kazakhstani specialists.
In May, Alexey Likhachev, CEO of the Rosatom state Corporation, announced that the Balkhash NPP would be built on the basis of Russian technologies, while Rosatom would become a key vendor of the entire project. Also, a project of this scale almost always requires intergovernmental agreements, as well as commercial and contractual obligations. The construction of the first nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan was launched in August 2025.
