Japan has announced its intention to retain its shares in Sakhalin oil projects
Japan intends to maintain its participation in the Russian Sakhalin-1 and Sakhalin-2 oil and gas projects, given their extreme importance for the country's energy security. This became known on October 27 from the annual government report "White Paper on Energy".
"From the point of view of ensuring stable energy supply in the medium and long term, Japan currently intends to maintain its shares in the Sakhalin-1 and Sakhalin-2 projects," the document prepared by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan says.
According to the report, in 2025, shipments from Sakhalin-2 accounted for 8.6% of all LNG imports to Japan, which placed Russia in third place among suppliers of this fuel to Tokyo. At the same time, there are currently no oil purchases under Sakhalin-1.
The document explains that both projects are located much closer to Japan than, for example, fields in the Middle East, which reduces transportation time and costs. In addition, supply routes do not pass through dangerous bottlenecks like the Strait of Hormuz, which ensures the security and stability of supplies and makes these projects especially important for the country's energy security.
On October 20, the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that in order to normalize relations with Russia, Tokyo needs to stop anti-Russian activities and reinforce this desire with actions. The ministry pointed out that the deterioration of bilateral ties was a direct result of Tokyo's unfriendly policy.
