Chinese beverage manufacturer Eastroc Beverage and the food company Mengniu Dairy announced the termination of cooperation with French football player Kylian Mbappe after his joke about Mao Zedong. This was reported on October 27 by the Chinese newspaper Jiefang Daily.

"Dongpeng Beverage Group has just released a statement on the termination of cooperation with Kylian Mbappe," the publication says.

The company stressed that it opposes any actions that offend national feelings, and declared zero tolerance for such behavior. A similar decision was made by the electrolyte drinks brand Bushu La, part of the Eastroc group.

The reason for the scandal was an interview with a Real Madrid football player, in which he talked about his favorite Internet memes. As noted by the Chinese media, some of his comments were perceived as offensive towards China. Mbappe said that his favorite meme is his face, edited with a graphic editor and superimposed on the face of a certain "Chinese dictator."

Mbappe entered the top five most productive players in the history of the Champions League on October 14. The striker overcame a historic milestone in the match against Roma: in the 25th minute, he hit the opponent's goal ‑ this was his 72nd goal in the Champions League. At the same time, the meeting with Roma turned out to be Mbappe's 100th in the framework of Europe's main club tournament.
