In Russia, omens helped people live in harmony with nature: they judged the weather, chose the best time for work, and planned household chores. There was not a single random date in the national calendar — each day had its own special signs, rituals and beliefs. Izvestia tells about the signs for October 25 and the church holidays that fall on this date.

Folk signs for October 25

In Russia, the day of Andron the Astrologer was celebrated on October 25. During the holiday, they watched the sky — they tried to guess what lay ahead by the stars and the weather. There was a proverb "Andron takes out the sky with the sixth, scoops up the stars with a scoop."

On the holiday, treats were prepared from the products of the new harvest: porridge made from fresh cereals, bread or pies made from newly ground flour. These dishes were served to relatives, friends, and neighbors. It was believed that in this way you can attract good luck, prosperity and financial stability in the coming winter period.

On Andron, the ancestors paid special attention to weather signs. According to the brightness of the stars and the direction of the wind, they judged what winter would be like: if the sky was clear, they expected severe cold weather, and if the stars twinkled weakly, they prepared for a thaw and snowfall.

Other signs of the day:

  • shooting star — for windy weather;
  • Thunder — for a short winter;
  • circles around the moon — for a dry summer;
  • the moon is red — for windy days;
  • low—flying clouds lead to warming;
  • lots of stars in the sky — for a good harvest of peas;
  • the snow has fallen and has not melted — for a rich harvest next year;
  • The leaves on the tops of the willows remain green by warm and early spring.

What not to do on October 25

In Russia, various prohibitions and superstitions were associated with Andron the Astrologer. It was believed that on a holiday one should not ask "Who is there?" if there is a knock on the door: according to popular belief, this way you can let trouble into the house. They also avoided excessive fun and loud laughter, so as not to attract trouble into their lives.

What else can not be done on October 25:

  • to recalculate money — you can lose your income;
  • fluffing a feather bed leads to a sleepless night;
  • do cleaning, laundry and needlework — you can "wash off" luck;
  • offending people and animals leads to poverty and personal troubles;
  • buying church candles for the house leads to diseases;
  • to do hard work, you can "add" even more difficult things to it.

What church holiday is celebrated on October 25

On October 25, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the holy Martyrs Prova, Tarakh and Andronikos. They suffered for their faith in Christ in 304 in the city of Tarsus of Cilicia under Emperor Diocletian. When asked by the pagans to sacrifice to idols, the saints firmly replied that they were sacrificing to the one God in their hearts. The proconsul, seeing their steadfastness, ordered the martyrs to be severely tortured. In the end, the saints suffered martyrdom. The Christians secretly took their remains and buried them.

Prayers on October 25

Prayers are addressed to the holy Martyrs Vladimir, Tarakh and Andronik for strengthening faith and perseverance in the face of trials, for overcoming fear and anxiety, for protection from injustice and persecution, for peace and harmony in the family and between loved ones, for deliverance from spiritual and bodily infirmity, as well as for the protection of friendship and fidelity.

Prayers to the Holy Martyrs Provo, Tarakh and Andronik

Troparion

The Holy martyr was transformed by the correction of heavenly power, as in the body of a mortal, bodiless enemy by the power of the Cross, having struggled for good, having invisibly conquered. And they pray to the Lord to have mercy on our souls.

Kontakion

You have revealed to us the glory of the Trinity, the good armourers and martyrs of Christ, and with a bang Andronikus also spoke: for you have rebuked all the godless tormentors, having suffered valiantly by faith.

Earlier, Izvestia reported on the traditions and prohibitions of the national holiday Evlampiy Zymokazatel.
