The government of Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar is deliberately worsening relations with Russia, despite its desire to maintain cooperation in the energy sector. Hungarian political expert Gabor Stier told about this on September 22.

"I often see a lot of optimism among Russian journalists and experts about Magyar and his attitude towards Russia, he is often called the "young Orban." Unfortunately, in all respects, there is a rapid degradation in relations, and this is especially evident from Budapest," the expert said in an interview with Lenta.ru .

Stier compared Hungary's current leadership to the government of former Prime Minister Viktor Orban. According to the expert, former supporters of Orban who became disillusioned with the former leader and advocate the country's membership in the European Union and NATO work in the Magyar's cabinet.

The political scientist believes that the actions of the new government hinder the implementation of an independent foreign policy course. According to him, one should not expect normalization of relations between Budapest and Moscow in the near future.

On October 10, Magyar claimed that Hungary intends to reduce energy supplies from Russia. At the same time, he admitted that it would not be possible to quickly abandon Russian oil and natural gas, and Budapest needed to look for alternative energy sources.

On the same day, the Hungarian Prime Minister announced that the government of the country intends to seek the inclusion in the new seven-year budget of the European Union compensation payments to the countries of the community for the refusal of Russian energy supplies. Magyar noted that the world remains in a difficult situation in the energy sector, including shortages of gasoline and diesel fuel. In his opinion, the budgets of the EU countries cannot withstand such a financial burden, and maintaining marginal fuel prices leads to a shortage.
