Recently, the West has been actively putting forward destructive initiatives in the field of maritime navigation, which are directed against Russia. This was announced on October 22 by Vyacheslav Maslennikov, Director of the Department of Pan-European Cooperation at the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"Recently, the West has been literally gushing with various destructive anti—Russian initiatives on the subject of maritime navigation," Maslennikov said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

The diplomat thus commented on Poland's decision to join the declaration on security in the Baltic, North Atlantic and Arctic. According to him, the document provides for strengthening cooperation between a number of European countries and Canada in the field of defense, intelligence, naval command and control.

Maslennikov noted that the declaration also addresses issues of control over the northern sea regions, freedom of navigation and the safety of underwater communications. The initiative was proposed by Norway in July at the NATO summit in Ankara.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, commenting on the actions of Western states against foreign tankers, said on October 13 that Russia demands Western countries to comply with international law and stop actions that Moscow considers piracy in international maritime affairs. According to her, the Westerners have gone beyond the framework of international law, which previously limited their aggressive policy.

On October 12, Russian Presidential aide and head of the Maritime Board Nikolai Patrushev reported that London and Brussels were working on plans to blockade the Baltic Sea and the straits leading into it. He noted that the risks for international sea routes are growing in other regions as well.
