The series "American Horror Story" was renewed for the 14th season.
The FX channel has officially renewed the anthology series "American Horror Story" for the 14th season, Deadline reports. The decision to continue one of the most successful horror projects of our time was announced by the network management just a week before the finale of the current 13th season.
Ratings and reviews of Season 13
The premiere of the 13th season, dubbed "AHS: 13", became the largest streaming debut in the history of the franchise. According to the publication, the project entered the top 10 of the Nielsen rating and demonstrated the best results on the Hulu and Disney+ platforms among all the works of showrunner Ryan Murphy. Despite the commercial success, the new episodes provoked mixed reactions. According to the Screen Rant portal, the 13th season showed a record gap in ratings: professional critics on the Rotten Tomatoes aggregator assigned it 100% "freshness", while the viewership rating dropped to 32-42%, which became one of the worst indicators for all the years of the show's existence.
The plot of the current season is a large-scale crossover that combines characters and locations from previous installments of the anthology.: "Murder House", "Coven", "Freak Show", "Hotel", "Cult", "Apocalypse" and "Double Session". At the center of the story is the global confrontation between witches and the forces of evil. In the story, the Supreme Witch Cordelia Goode, whose role was again played by Sarah Paulson, has to look for allies in hell itself to prevent the end of the world and defeat the Devil.
Season 14 and the future of the franchise
The details of season 14 are still being kept secret, but showrunner Ryan Murphy has already hinted at a possible change in the development vector. According to Screen Rant, after an overloaded crossover with characters, the series is likely to return to its original classic anthology format with a completely independent story.
The stable future of the franchise is also ensured by administrative changes in the career of its creator. Earlier, Ryan Murphy left Netflix and signed a new long-term contract with Disney. According to Variety, this agreement allows the producer to fully focus on developing his key brands for the FX channel and Hulu streaming, without being torn between different media giants.
The previous time, the decision on the long-term extension of "American Horror Story" was made in 2020. Then the TV network ordered the production of three seasons at once — from the 11th to the 13th inclusive. Rumors have been circulating in the industry for a long time that the 13th season could be the final, but high viewing ratings convinced the FX management to continue working on the project.
Project history
"American Horror Story," created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falczak, has been airing since 2011. To date, it is the longest-running hour-long series in the history of FX. Over the 15 years of its existence, the horror anthology has received more than 100 Emmy Award nominations and won 17 awards. The concept of the show implies that every year the audience is presented with a new setting and plot, while the main cast often wanders from season to season, trying on different images.
One of the bright stars of the early years of the project was Jessica Lange. Recently, the actress compiled her own rating of her favorite characters, whom she happened to play as part of the anthology. She named Elsa Mars, the domineering manager of the Cirque du Freak from the fourth season, as her favorite. Despite the fact that Lang has not appeared in the main cast for a long time, fans do not lose hope for her return in future episodes, given the tendency of the authors to return old characters.
