- The political scientist called the combination of support for Kiev and stability unrealistic for the EU.
The wave of protests in France has escalated into a systemic crisis in which support for Ukraine and bringing order to Europe have become mutually exclusive. This was stated to Izvestia by political analyst Mikhail Kucherov.
"Today, for the first time, the ruling circles of European countries are faced with the dilemma of choosing between maintaining Ukraine's combat capability and restoring order in their own home. Compromise is no longer possible, as one thing excludes the other," Kucherov said on October 20.
According to him, officials are faced with the issue of prioritization at the pan-European level, since it is impossible to simultaneously ensure energy security, social stability, combat climate change and take on new foreign policy commitments. The expert warned that if governments choose to support external partners, citizens will make every effort to displace them. This will inevitably play into the hands of alternative, primarily right-wing parties, which will take advantage of the moment to seize the political initiative.
Kucherov also noted that the social demands of the demonstrators are an outburst of systemic discontent with domestic politics. The migration problem is acute in all the countries affected by the protests, and the internal political dimension is directly related to the foreign policy course of the EU countries.
Mass demonstrations by students in France began on September 29 and have since spread to almost the entire country: students demanded to improve learning conditions and solve the problem of the shortage of teachers. By October 19, it became known that the police had lost control of the situation with protests in a number of cities in France. Against this background, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez decided to resign, but President Emmanuel Macron did not accept it.
On October 20, the leader of the French National Unification Party, Jordan Bardella, noted that the French authorities had lost control of the riots and capitulated, and there was no one else to protect the country's population.
