Joe Kent, former director of the US National Counterterrorism Center, said that Washington should reduce aid to Ukraine and take the initiative to change NATO policy in order to bring the conflict to an end. He said this on October 17 in an interview on Glenn Diesen's YouTube channel.

"I think in order to really put an end to the <military operation>, two steps need to be taken: first, to significantly reduce the support we provide to Ukrainians; secondly, to change our relations with other NATO countries and assert our role as the dominant force in the alliance, saying: 'No, the policy will now be like this.'"". <...> This would be a very serious diplomatic step," Kent stressed.

In his opinion, if any NATO country decides to pursue its own policy towards Ukraine, it should act outside the alliance.

On the same day, the White House explained that the United States refuses to apply new sanctions measures against Russia, as this could interfere with negotiations on a settlement of the conflict in Ukraine.

On the same day, President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky suggested that the lifting of sanctions against Russia would continue. He noted that Russia "cannot be stopped" in this way after its support by Trump.

On October 16, US President Donald Trump announced that he did not intend to impose a number of sanctions provided for in the draft law on tightening restrictive measures against the Russian Federation. He also refused to apply a number of duties in the amount of 100 or 500% and sanctions against countries that buy energy resources from the Russian Federation.
