The administration of US President Donald Trump believes that the application of new sanctions measures against Russia could interfere with negotiations on the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. This was announced on October 17 by White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers.

"Applying the sanctions provisions now would hinder the ongoing efforts of the United States to achieve a lasting and comprehensive negotiated peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia. The president retains the opportunity to take these measures at any time if he decides that it is in the national interests of [the United States]," Axios quoted her as saying.

According to her, Trump "made it clear that he wants an end" to the conflict. The administration representative also noted that the new law provides the president with additional opportunities to achieve a peaceful settlement.

"As negotiations continue, this law gives the president additional powers to achieve a peaceful settlement," Rogers added.

On the same day, President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky suggested that the lifting of sanctions against Russia would continue. He noted that Russia "cannot be stopped" in this way after its support by Trump.

On October 16, Trump announced that he did not intend to impose a number of sanctions provided for in the draft law on tightening restrictive measures against the Russian Federation. He also refused to apply a number of duties in the amount of 100 or 500% and sanctions against countries that buy energy resources from the Russian Federation.
