Zelensky asked the European Union to allocate €70 billion to Ukraine for defense
On October 16, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky appealed to the leaders of the European Union with a request to provide Kiev with at least €70 billion in additional financial assistance in 2027 to finance defense and arms purchases.
"We need at least €70 billion extra from you — for defense, for weapons and for our resilience. This is a realistic amount. And I ask you to find this support," Ukrayinska Pravda quoted Zelensky as saying.
According to the Ukrainian president, the total cost of military operations next year will reach 155 billion euros. In particular, Kiev expects to allocate additional funds to expand the production of drones.
Zelensky believes that increasing the production of drones will allow Ukrainian troops to more effectively counter Russian offensive operations.
The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced on October 11 that the EU intends to allocate additional financing to Ukraine this week for the purchase of UAVs and missiles. She did not specify the specific amount of the new tranche, the sources of financing and the timing of its provision.
The newspaper Les Échos reported on October 2 that members of the European Parliament had sent representatives of the European Commission an initiative to transfer frozen Russian assets in excess of €200 billion to Ukraine. The idea was supported in writing by 122 politicians. They expect that Russia's assets will be transferred from the Euroclear depository to some kind of mechanism that will be controlled by the EC.
