Russian tennis player Medvedev spoke about his victory over Tsitsipas in Shanghai
Russian tennis player, sixth racket of the world Daniil Medvedev commented on his victory over Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas in the 1/8 finals of the Masters tournament in Shanghai. The match ended with a score of 6:4, 7:5 in favor of the Russian.
After the match, the 2021 US Open champion explained why confrontations with a Greek athlete ranked 43rd in the world always turn out to be spectacular. According to Medvedev, this is due to the high level of skill of both athletes.
"I think the whole point is that we're both good players. Sometimes we perform a little better during the season, sometimes a little worse. For example, at the beginning of this season, Stefanos may not have had the best period. But in our match, it seemed to me that he played better than in the semifinals of the Grand Slam tournaments," Medvedev said at a press conference.
The Russian stressed that in face-to-face meetings of tennis players of this level, the result can be any. He noted that both opponents know the technique of hitting from both sides, and expressed satisfaction that this time he was able to prove himself more effective than his opponent.
At the Shanghai tournament, Daniil Medvedev was seeded at number 5, while Stefanos Tsitsipas received the number 10 seed. For the Greek tennis player, his performance at the tournament ended at the fourth round stage after losing to the Russian on October 14.
Medvedev's next opponent in the quarterfinals will be American tennis player Tommy Paul. He was seeded 15th, and in the fourth round he beat Belgian Ziza Bergs with a score of 7:6 (7:5), 6:4. The meeting lasted 1 hour and 50 minutes.
Paul and Medvedev had previously met on the court four times, three of them ended with the victory of the Russian.
