On Monday, Russian schools and colleges will host another lesson from the "Conversations about important things" series. Younger students will discuss the history of Russian railways, and teenagers and high school students will get acquainted with the biography of the outstanding Russian ballerina Galina Ulanova. Izvestia reports on how the lesson will be held on October 19.
"Talking about important things" on October 19 — the topic of the lesson
It was not by chance that they decided to turn to the history of railways. October marks the 175th anniversary of the opening of the railway link between Moscow and St. Petersburg. The first trains passed through this highway in 1851. It significantly reduced the travel time between the two largest cities of the country and became an important stage in the development of the Russian transport system.
Railways connected remote regions, contributed to the growth of cities and the development of industry. However, the work of several generations of engineers, builders, machinists, trackmen and dispatchers is behind the usual train movement today. It is the history of the development of railway transport and the professions on which its work depends that will be discussed with students of grades 1-5, as well as senior students of vocational education and training within the framework of the topic "The History of Russian Railways".
Andrey Nikitin, Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation, will join the class in a video interview format. He will talk about the development of the country's transport system today. Students will also watch the video "VSM. Building a highway together", dedicated to the construction of a modern high-speed railway.
The theme "Galina Sergeevna Ulanova" has been prepared for students of grades 6-11 and first-year students of the Vocational School. The lesson will be dedicated to the life and work of the outstanding ballerina, whose professional debut took place on October 21, 1928. Then Ulanova performed the role of Florina in Pyotr Tchaikovsky's ballet The Sleeping Beauty on the stage of the Leningrad State Opera and Ballet Theater, now the Mariinsky Theater.
During the lesson, students will discuss how ballet conveys the feelings and characters of the characters with the help of movements, music and plastics. They will also learn why Ulanova's work has gained international recognition and has become part of the world cultural heritage. The video "Galina Sergeevna Ulanova" will help to get acquainted with the biography of the artist, and the interactive games "For the ease of dancing" and "Lessons of Ulanova: the formula of mastery" will help to consolidate knowledge.
The duration of the lesson is 45 minutes. Methodological materials, including scripts, presentations, videos and interactive tasks, are available on the official website of the project.
"Conversations about important things" on October 19 — lesson program
For students in grades 1-4, the lesson will begin with a conversation about how people travel between cities and why railways are especially important for a large country. The teacher will suggest imagining life without trains and discussing how heavy loads used to be transported, getting to other settlements and delivering groceries. Then the students will look at the images of the first steam locomotives and compare them with modern high-speed trains.
In grades 5, students will talk about what technologies make modern trains fast, comfortable and safe. In the final part of the lesson, students will complete an interactive task where they will have to relate professions to the responsibilities of specialists and explain why the result depends on the actions of each participant.
Students of grades 6-7 will talk about the life of a bright representative of the Russian ballet school Galina Ulanova. They will learn about her studies at a choreographic school and becoming a professional ballerina. Special attention will be paid to the mentor's role. For Galina Ulanova, it was teacher Agrippina Vaganova. Later, the ballerina became a mentor herself and passed on her experience to young artists.
In grades 8-9, students will discuss what qualities help a person succeed in their profession and why natural talent alone is not enough. An important part of the program will be an interactive game that will help you understand how much work it costs to perform. In conclusion, the teacher will invite students to formulate the terms of mastery and success themselves.
High school students and first-year college students will consider the biography of Galina Ulanova in the context of choosing a profession and searching for their vocation. Ulanova's story will help them understand that choosing a life path requires not only an interest in business, but also a willingness to work and learn from others. Students will then analyze how the same principles are important in science, sports, and other areas of life.
Both themes are united by the idea of creative work and its importance to society. Using the example of railway history, students will see how the work of engineers and builders helps to develop the country and connect its regions. And the story of Galina Ulanova will show how talent, perseverance and dedication contribute to the development of art and the preservation of cultural heritage.
"Conversations about important things" on October 19 — about the project
"Conversations about important things" is a series of extracurricular activities dedicated to the history, culture and geography of Russia, as well as topical issues of everyday life of schoolchildren. The project was launched by the Ministry of Education of Russia in 2022. Classes are held on Mondays in all Russian schools and colleges.
The format of the project has changed since September 2026. Previously, students from 1st to 11th grade discussed a common topic, but now the program is divided by age. The first topic is being developed specifically for younger students in grades 1-5, and the second is designed for older students and college students.
The previous lesson of the "Talking about important things" cycle took place on October 12. We discussed Internet security with younger students, and talked with teenagers and high school students about social networks and protection from fraudsters.
