Scientist allowed character change after heart transplant
A change in a person's character after a heart transplant cannot be ruled out, but this issue requires further study. This was announced on October 16 by Xiaoping Ren, professor and director of the Orthopaedics Department at the Second Affiliated Hospital of the University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
"I don't specialize in cardiovascular surgery, but I've heard such stories that after heart transplantation, sometimes patients' personalities changed. This is, of course, a very interesting scientific question that needs to be studied," the scientist said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
He also noted the prospects of xenotransplantation, the transplantation of animal organs to humans. According to Ren, pig organs are the closest to human organs, and research is continuing in this area.
"And now there is a lot of research on this issue. It is possible that clinical trials will be conducted in the future. Therefore, it is theoretically possible to transplant a spinal cord from a pig to a human," the professor noted.
The day before, Ren said that people will be able to live for centuries if scientists master the transplantation of a head to another body. According to the scientist, the procedure may become a reality in the near future, since similar animal studies have been completed successfully.
