Tesla Unveils New Roadster with Flight Capability
Tesla has unveiled a new generation Roadster model capable of performing flips in the air and accelerating to 60 mph in less than a second. The presentation of the car took place on Thursday evening and was broadcast live, the Business Insider portal reported.
During the demonstration, the car climbed up a curved ramp, flipped over and landed. According to the head of Tesla, Elon Musk, the model was developed jointly with SpaceX engineers. An ultra-high pressure compressed air system is used to lift the vehicle.
"The car obviously has maneuvering engines for altitude control and main engines in the tail section, so it can essentially fly like a rocket," Musk noted.
In a separate demo, the Roadster accelerated to 60 mph in 0.81 seconds. Musk also stated that this will be the only Tesla car designed for manual operation, and noted that the model is not necessarily optimized for safety.
On October 8, US President Donald Trump presented Musk with the National Science Medal for his Contribution to Scientific Research. The American leader called him a "modern-day Thomas Edison" and noted that SpaceX had played an important role in preserving NASA's independence in carrying out manned space launches.
Almost nine years after the presentation of the Semi electric truck, Tesla began delivering the first production batches of the model to customers, it was reported on September 25. The first customers were large companies, including PepsiCo, DHL and US Foods.
