- Likhachev announced plans to build a nuclear power plant on the Moon by the mid-2030s
Russia is expected to build the first nuclear power plant on the moon by the mid-2030s. This was announced on October 15 by Alexey Likhachev, head of the Rosatom State Corporation, during an excursion for foreign scientists at the Atom Museum at VDNH.
"By the middle of the next decade, we must create a nuclear power plant on the Moon in order to organize such an alien station," TASS quoted Likhachev as saying.
The head of Rosatom said back in April that the state corporation, together with Roscosmos, was developing a lunar power unit with a capacity of up to 10 kW, but was already thinking about a station project an order of magnitude more powerful, since this was not enough for industrial development of the Moon. Without powerful nuclear power, deep space will remain an episodic expedition, not a development zone, the head of the state corporation concluded.
Likhachev said on October 14 that Rosatom does not exclude the construction of additional gigafactories for the production of energy storage devices. He clarified that the issue of building new enterprises will be considered after the launch of the gigafactory in the Kaliningrad region and the full utilization of production facilities in Krasnaya Pakhra and Kaliningrad.
