The Chinese-made BMW i3 has set a record for the brand in driving range
The BMW i3 electric sedan in the 50L version, designed for the Chinese market, covered 1,213 km on a single battery charge. This result corresponds to 118% of the officially declared power reserve and is a record for single-charge driving range among electric vehicles of the Bavarian brand, CarNewsChina reports on October 15.
The race took place on various types of roads, including expressways, country roads and city streets. By the end of the trip, the car had 1% charge remaining, and the average energy consumption was 8.8 kWh per 100 km.
The test involved a rear-wheel drive version of the sedan. The range also includes an all-wheel drive modification with two electric motors with a total power of 469 hp and a maximum torque of 645 Nm. The tested i3 50L is equipped with a battery with a capacity of 113.4 kWh and an 800-volt architecture. The system supports fast charging with a capacity of up to 400 kW — in 10 minutes you can replenish the power reserve by 400 km.
Representatives of the brand spoke about the possibilities of the electric car at the launch ceremony of mass production of sixth-generation batteries at BMW's Shenyang plant. Investments in the expansion of production amounted to 10 billion yuan (about $1.5 billion). The area of the complex reaches 240 thousand square meters, which is five times more than BMW's previous battery production facilities in the region.
The new batteries are designed for models of the Neue Class family. The BMW i3 is expected to enter the Chinese market in the fourth quarter of this year, and production of the sedan will be organized at the BMW Brilliance joint venture.
The record for the range of an electric car without recharging belongs to Audi. As reported on September 25, the Audi A6 Sportback e-tron model covered 1,338 km non-stop. The achievement is recorded by the Guinness Book of Records.
