Ovechkin surpassed Howe in the number of points scored in the third period in the NHL
Alexander Ovechkin, the captain and forward of the Washington Capitals, rose to the third place in the history of the National Hockey League (NHL) in terms of the number of points scored in the third periods. This happened on October 15 after a Russian assist in a home match against the Montreal Canadiens, which ended with a 5-4 victory for the hosts.
Ovechkin scored his second assist of the season. In total, the 41-year—old forward has three points in the championship - one goal and two assists.
The meeting with Montreal brought the Russian 622nd point in the third periods of the NHL regular season matches. Thanks to this indicator, Ovechkin beat the legendary Canadian Gordie Howe. Only Wayne Gretzky with 996 points and Jaromir Jagr with 653 are above him.
At the same time, Ovechkin continues to hold the historical lead in goals scored in the third periods. He has 352 such pucks on his account.
Ovechkin announced his retirement from the NHL on October 5 and urged himself to enjoy the moments. Then he had to appear in at least 82 games. The hockey player indicated that he loves his sport and stressed that the decision was agreed with his family members.
The next day, three-time Olympic figure skating champion and State Duma deputy Irina Rodnina supported the idea of erecting a monument to Ovechkin during his lifetime. She recalled that the relevant practice already exists, for example, on CSKA Alley.
