Eight bears were eliminated in the Irkutsk region in a day.
Over the past day, eight brown bears have been eliminated in the Irkutsk region as part of population control. As reported on Monday, October 14, in the press service of the government of the region, the situation with the release of predators to populated areas remains tense.
Over the past 24 hours, a single 112 number has received 19 reports of dangerous animals, 10 of which have been confirmed. The largest number of complaints was recorded in Bratsk, Slyudyansky, Usolsky and Shelekhovsky districts. A high-alert regime continues to operate in the region, introduced by decree of Governor Igor Kobzev on September 18, 2026.
Three predators were captured in the Slyudyansky district, two each in Ust—Ilimsky and Taishetsky, and another bear was shot in the Shelekhovsky district. According to RIA Novosti, a total of 483 individuals have been eliminated in the Irkutsk Region since the beginning of the period of activity. During 2026, the authorities made 221 decisions to regulate the number of 738 animals.
Experts note that the population of predators in the region significantly exceeds the norm. According to the publication MK Irkutsk, the total number of brown bears in the Irkutsk region is about 22.1–22.4 thousand individuals. At the same time, the maximum allowable number for the region is limited to 18.1 thousand individuals. Experts cite the reasons for the frequent release of animals to humans as high population density, lack of natural food in forests, the presence of unauthorized landfills near villages and the gradual habituation of predators to humans.
The situation with the attacks remains critical. Seven deaths were recorded in the Irkutsk region: three people died in the Kirensky district, one each in the Ust-Ilimsky and Kazachinsko-Lena districts. Two more deaths occurred in the winter quarters of Nizhneilimsky and Bratsky districts. Similar statistics are observed in the neighboring region.: According to the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, seven people also died there during the month from bear attacks.
To ensure the safety of the population in the Angara region, more than 140 mobile groups have been formed, which include experienced hunters and hunters. As part of the current high-alert regime, residents are strongly advised to limit visits to forests, and not to let children and the elderly go outside unaccompanied. Local authorities have been instructed to eliminate landfills of household waste as soon as possible, which attract predators to the borders of settlements.
