Russia will create its own artificial intelligence for the education system
The Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation has decided to create a sovereign artificial intelligence (AI) in the education system. This was announced on Friday, October 9, by the head of the department Sergey Kravtsov at the plenary session of the Digital Innopolis Days forum.
According to the minister, the relevant department is currently searching for and selecting a technology partner for the implementation of a large-scale project. Kravtsov stressed that all existing domestic AI solutions are planned to be integrated into a single neural network.
"We have already made a decision based on the results of the president's response to the teacher's question about creating our own sovereign artificial intelligence in the education system. Now we are choosing a technology partner, and our artificial intelligence will be created," he said.
The initiative to create a specialized educational neural network belongs to Alexey Morozov, the winner of the Teacher of the Year 2026 competition, a computer science teacher from the Tver Region. The proposal was announced on October 5, 2026, during a meeting between Vladimir Putin and the laureates of pedagogical competitions. The Russian President supported the idea, noting the importance of creating a secure digital learning environment.
AI will be taught on government textbooks
The neural network was proposed to be trained on strictly verified content: unified government programs and textbooks. The key requirement for the system will be to rely on traditional values and use only proven educational materials.
In parallel with the development of sovereign AI, the agency is introducing new educational standards. From the second quarter of 2026, testing of the specialized course "Artificial Intelligence and Information Security" will begin in 1,000 Russian schools. According to Kravtsov, starting from September of the next academic year, this subject will become mandatory for all students from 5th to 11th grade. Classes will be held at least once a week.
To ensure the educational process, the Ministry of Education, together with Yandex, the Russian Academy of Sciences and scientist Alexander Gasnikov, is developing a new textbook on computer science. The manual will provide a full-fledged platform for practical training in modern technologies.
Teachers will be taught how to work with neural networks
The digital transformation in education will require staff training. According to the head of the Ministry of Education and Science Maksut Shadaev, it is planned to retrain 250 thousand teachers by the end of 2026. Teachers will be trained in the methods of using artificial intelligence tools in the educational process.
Earlier, on October 2, Sergey Kravtsov called the adaptation of the education system to the rapid development of technology the main pedagogical challenge of our time. The creation of a sovereign AI will be a key stage in the formation of an independent digital ecosystem of Russian schools.
