The Bridgerton universe will expand with a new series about the family's past. Netflix has launched a prequel that will tell about Violet Bridgerton's youth and her affair with Viscount Edmund, the future parents of eight children around whom the story of the original project is based. What is known about the spin-off and what role its characters play in the Bridgertons is in the Izvestia article.

The love story that started the Bridgertons

Netflix and the production company Shondaland have announced that they are working on a new series in the Bridgerton universe. The project has not yet received an official name. It will focus on Violet's early years and her relationship with her future husband Edmund Bridgerton. The creators promise to show a love story that preceded the events of the main series and determined the future of a large family.

According to Deadline magazine, Shonda Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini are working on the prequel: they will serve as screenwriters, showrunners and executive producers. Tom Verica, who previously worked on the franchise's series, will also join the project as director and executive producer. Among the producers is Betsy Beers, Rimes' longtime partner in television projects.

The prequel will become a separate story inside a world already familiar to viewers. So far, Netflix has not announced the premiere date and the cast that will play the young Violet and Edmund. It is also unknown how far the plot will go in time: whether it will focus solely on the couple's acquaintance or cover a longer period of their lives.

"The Bridgertons": four seasons and a continuation of the story

The original series was released on Netflix in 2020 and is based on a series of romance novels by American writer Julia Quinn. The action takes place in an alternate version of Regency London. In the center of the plot is the aristocratic Bridgerton family, whose members are looking for love, face social conventions and try to combine personal desires with the expectations of relatives and high society.

To date, four seasons have been released. Each of them focuses on the romantic story of one of Violet's children: in the first seasons, viewers followed Daphne, Anthony and Colin, and the fourth is dedicated to Benedict and his relationship with Sophie Beck. At the same time, the series is not limited to the love lines of the main characters: the relationship between brothers and sisters, family conflicts and the lives of other representatives of London society are of great importance.

The sequel to the franchise is already being prepared. The fifth season will focus on Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling. According to Netflix, the premiere is expected in 2027, and production is already underway. A sixth season has also been confirmed. Thus, the new prequel will become another part of the franchise, but instead of the next generation of Bridgertons, it will take viewers back to the past — to the story of their parents.

Violet Bridgerton: Mother of eight children and keeper of family history

In the original series, Violet is played by Ruth Gemmell. She is the Dowager Viscountess and mother of eight children, who strives to help each of them find a suitable life partner. Violet supports traditional ideas about marriage, but at the same time wants children to enter into a relationship for love, and not just for the sake of position in society.

Violet's husband, Edmund, died long before the main events began. Therefore, the audience sees the heroine as a widow who continues to cherish the memory of her beloved. Their marriage remains for her the most important example of true love, and the memories of it influence how she perceives the romantic stories of her own children. Violet doesn't just help them navigate the rules of high society.: she wants them to experience the same deep affection that she knew herself.

At the same time, Violet gradually reveals herself as an independent heroine with her own desires. In the fourth season, she develops a romantic line with Lord Marcus Anderson. She thinks about the possibility of a relationship again, but realizes that she is not ready to rush into a new marriage. This story shows that Violet's life does not end with motherhood and the loss of her husband: she has her own feelings and the right to choose the future.

In the prequel, viewers will see the other side of the heroine — the young Violet, who has not yet become the head of a large family. A young version of the character, played by Connie Jenkins-Grieg, has already appeared in the series "Queen Charlotte". However, it is not yet known whether the actress will return to this role. The new project should reveal Violet's past in more detail and show how her relationship with Edmund developed.

Edmund Bridgerton: The beloved husband whose death changed the family

Edmund is Viscount Bridgerton, Violet's husband and the father of eight children. In the original series, the character is practically not present in the present tense of the narrative: he died before the events began, but his memory remains an important part of family history. Edmund is not just an absent father who is sometimes remembered. His relationship with Violet sets an emotional benchmark for the whole family and influences the characters' ideas about love, fidelity and marriage.

Edmund's death was caused by a bee sting. This tragedy was a turning point for Violet and their children. In particular, memories of his father and the circumstances of his death help to understand the character of Anthony, the eldest son of the family. After the loss of Edmund, he had to take responsibility for his loved ones and become the head of the family, although he was still grieving. As a result, Anthony's relationship with love and responsibilities is largely determined by the fear of losing a loved one again.

The prequel will bring Edmund to the center of the story for the first time. If his image in the main series consists of Violet's memories and children, then the new project will be able to show his character, views and relationship with his future wife directly. Viewers will learn how Violet and Edmund met, what brought them closer, and how the family formed, whose stories became the basis of the franchise.

So far, the creators have not revealed the details of the casting, so it is not known who will play the young viscount. It has also not been announced whether the series will detail the couple's family life after the wedding or focus primarily on their romance. These details are important for understanding what the prequel will turn out to be: a story of two characters meeting or a larger story about the formation of the Bridgerton family.

The prequel will reveal the beginning of a family story

The new series will be the second prequel in the Bridgerton universe. In 2023, Netflix released "Queen Charlotte: The Bridgerton Story," about Queen Charlotte's youth and her marriage to King George III. The project showed how the personal relationships of the monarchs influenced their future lives and position at court. Now the creators will turn to another pair that occupies an important place in the history of the franchise, but has so far remained outside the main plot.

The new prequel will focus not on another story of one of the family's children, but on the relationship between two people, thanks to which the eight main characters of the original series appeared. This will give a new look at Violet, whom viewers are used to seeing as a caring mother, and Edmund, whose influence on the family is felt even after his death. Their novel can complement the already well-known stories and explain why love remains one of the main values of the Bridgerton family.

The series is currently in the early stages of development. The title, release date and cast have not been announced. It is known that Shonda Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini are working on the project, and the plot will focus on Violet's youth and her affair with Viscount Edmund. Netflix promises to reveal the rest of the details later.

On September 29, Medialogia presented the Russian series rating for August of this year. The spin-off of "Game of Thrones" series "House of the Dragon" became the leader of the month.
