Orthodox Christians celebrate the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on October 14, one of the most important Theotokos holidays. It is associated with the legend of the appearance of the Mother of God in the Blachernae Church in Constantinople. This day has received special veneration in Russia, becoming an important milestone of the national calendar — the time of transition from autumn to winter and the beginning of the wedding season. The information about what can and cannot be done on Pokrov is in the Izvestia article.

What is the feast of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos: date and meaning

The full name of the holiday is the Protection of Our Most Holy Lady, Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary. It is celebrated annually at the same time — on October 14th. In 2026, this date falls on Wednesday. For Orthodox believers, this is a day of special reverence for the Mother of God and prayers for her intercession for people.

The event that became the basis of the holiday took place in 910 in Constantinople, in the Blachernae Church, where one of the main shrines, the robe of the Mother of God, was kept. At that time, the city was besieged by enemies, and the imperial army had not yet returned from the previous campaign. People could only rely on the protection of the Virgin.

According to legend, during the all-night vigil, which was attended by many believers, St. Andrew the Fool saw the Virgin Mary surrounded by angels and saints. She prayed with the parishioners, and then took off the omophorion veil from her head and spread it over the worshippers. This vision became a symbol of heavenly protection and intercession. Soon the threat to the city was over.

The memory of the miraculous phenomenon formed the basis of the church holiday. It came to Russia from Byzantium and became widespread in the 12th century. The tradition of celebrating the Intercession of the Virgin is associated with Prince Andrew Bogolyubsky. During his lifetime, one of the most famous churches dedicated to the Intercession was built, the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl in the Vladimir region. It was built in 1165 and today is considered one of the outstanding monuments of ancient Russian architecture.

Ancient images of the Intercession have also been preserved in the art monuments of Suzdal and Pskov. Over time, the holiday became widespread throughout Russia, and its name began to appear in the names of temples and monasteries.

Pokrov occupies a special place in the history of Moscow. In the middle of the 16th century, the Pokrovsky Cathedral, known as St. Basil's Cathedral, was built on Red Square. It was built by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible in memory of the capture of Kazan in 1552. The victory of the Russian troops fell on the celebration of the Intercession, so the new church was consecrated in his honor. Today, the cathedral remains one of the most recognizable symbols of the capital.

What can I do on Pokrov on October 14th

In 2026, the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos falls on Wednesday, which, according to church regulations, is a fast day. However, for the sake of a great holiday, believers are being given a break. On this day, it is allowed to eat fish, food in vegetable oil and drink some wine. At the same time, the restrictions associated with fasting do not negate the main meaning of the day — participation in worship and prayer.

Believers are encouraged to visit the church and take part in the festive Liturgy, confess and receive communion. If you can't come to the service, you can spend the day at home in prayer, spiritual reading and quiet communication with your loved ones. It is also customary to perform good deeds on Pokrov, to help relatives, the elderly and those who need support.

Separate rules exist for church sacraments. For example, weddings in the Orthodox tradition are not performed on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, as well as on the eve of some major holidays. In 2026, it is possible to get married on October 14. A baptism, unlike a wedding, can be performed on any day, including on major holidays.

However, not every church will be able to hold the sacraments on October 14. On the feast day, the clergy have a busy schedule of divine services, confession and communion. Therefore, it is worth contacting the selected temple in advance and agreeing on the date and time.

Is it possible to clean, wash your hair and go to the cemetery

Studying, working, and performing necessary household chores are not prohibited on Pokrov. At the same time, believers are advised not to overload the holiday with activities that can be done in advance or postponed to another day to free up time for prayer and worship.

The same applies to hygienic and cosmetological procedures, such as shampooing, haircuts, and hair coloring. The Church does not prohibit them on the day of Intercession. The idea that you can't wash or get a haircut on a big Orthodox holiday belongs to everyday superstitions, not to church tradition.

There is also no ban on visiting the cemetery on a holiday. If necessary, you can come to the graves of relatives, pray for the deceased and put the burial place in order. Meanwhile, it is better to choose special days for this — parental Saturdays. The nearest one, Pokrovskaya, was on the eve of the holiday, on October 10. The next one, Dimitrievskaya, in 2026 falls on November 7.

What can not be done on the Protection of the Virgin

The main restrictions on the Veil are primarily related to actions that prevent a large church holiday from being held with dignity or contradict its spiritual meaning. On this day, believers are advised to avoid quarrels, anger, insults, conflicts and other actions that can disrupt peace in the family and relationships with others.

It is not necessary to turn the holiday solely into an occasion for noisy entertainment and feasts. At the same time, the church does not establish a separate ban on the festive table or communication with relatives. After the service, the whole family can gather, prepare treats and spend time together. The main thing is to observe moderation and adhere to a lean menu.

Fortune-telling occupies a special place among undesirable activities. The autumn wedding season in Russia traditionally began with the Intercession, so many folk customs were associated with this day, including fortune-telling for the betrothed. However, the Church does not approve of fortune-telling, divination, and attempts to find out the future through magical practices, either on Pokrov or any other day.

What else can't be done on October 14th:

  • To refuse help and hospitality is especially important on this day to take care of others.;
  • drinking alcohol and overeating — a holiday should not turn into an excuse for gluttony;
  • Gossiping and swearing is unacceptable behavior for a Christian.;
  • to indulge in despondency and gloomy thoughts — the Veil calls for prayer and hope.

Folk signs for October 14: the weather and marriage

In the national calendar, the Veil was considered an important boundary between autumn and winter. In Russia, the holiday was called the first winter and was associated with the onset of cold weather, which was reflected in proverbs and sayings: "The Cover is the meeting of autumn with winter," "Before the Cover is autumn, after the Cover is winter," "The cover covers the earth — where a leaf, and where a snowball."

By that day, they were trying to complete the field work, insulate the huts and stock up on firewood. During the holiday itself, we closely monitored the weather and natural phenomena in order to predict what winter would be like. Hence the expression "As the Cover is, so is the winter." If snow fell on the holiday, expect a snowy and cold winter. Also, the snow on the Cover foreshadowed a snowfall on Dmitrievsky Day, November 8.

Rain on the Cover, according to popular beliefs, foreshadowed a stormy autumn. If there were still leaves on the trees by the holiday, severe frosts were expected. And the early departure of the cranes served as a harbinger of a cold and prolonged winter.

There are also many beliefs about marriage associated with the Veil. The image of the Virgin with the omophorion was associated with the bride's veil and the shawl that married women used to cover their heads. Therefore, the holiday was considered especially significant for unmarried girls. "Cover the holiday, cover the ground with a snowball, and my head with a crown," they used to say in the old days.

From early morning, the girls hurried to the church to be the first to place a candle in front of the image of the Virgin. They believed that the one who did it before everyone else would get married before the others. Couples in love often arranged weddings on Pokrov, associating this with the hope of a long and happy family life.

In addition, the custom of having a wedding on Pokrov had a purely practical basis. By this time, the harvest had already been harvested, the main household chores had been completed, and there was time for wedding festivities.

Earlier, Izvestia was told what not to do on the Nativity of the Virgin.
