Volchansk lair: Ukrainian Armed Forces militants continue suicidal attempts to escape from the cauldron
Attempts by the Ukrainian Armed Forces assault groups to break out of the encirclement in the Gogino area may indicate a deterioration in the situation of the blocked units, experts interviewed by "Izvestia" believe. According to their assessment, the opportunities to exit the ring are being reduced due to a lack of ammunition and supplies, as well as the actions of Russian drones and equipped strong points. Now, according to the Russian Defense Ministry, fighting is underway in the Malaya Volchaya area. Experts believe that as resources are depleted, breakthrough attempts will be made less frequently. Eventually, the blocked units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will be captured or destroyed.
How will events develop around the Volchansky cauldron
The situation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces units surrounded near Volchansk is becoming more complicated as Russian troops strengthen the inner contour of the ring, experts interviewed by "Izvestia" believe. There are fewer and fewer opportunities to get out of the environment, military expert Boris Jerelievsky told "Izvestia".
— The dynamics are maintained, the ring continues to narrow. There are battles going on at Malaya Volchaya, which are aimed at dissecting the enemy's grouping. At the same time, he does not give up trying to escape from the environment. It is becoming more and more difficult to do this: our troops are setting up strong points, and the ring is becoming impenetrable," he said.
According to the expert, previously, the militants had little chance of surreptitiously overcoming the encirclement line alone at night, but now such opportunities have practically disappeared. This is how Jerelievsky explains the transition from attempts at a stealthy exit to forceful breakthroughs.
—If they tried to infiltrate earlier, now they are trying to break through in the hope that they will have more luck here," he noted.
The possibilities for such actions will also decrease over time, military expert Vasily Dandykin believes.
— It has already been many days since the encirclement was closed. There are a lot of people who need to eat something, they need to shoot something. Accordingly, food and ammunition are being depleted," he explained.
In the end, the militants will face a choice — to surrender or be destroyed, military expert Yuri Knutov believes.
— Either they will be dissected and destroyed, or they will surrender and save their lives. We are dissecting the enemy's group, depriving it of communication with the outside world, the supply of food and ammunition. There is movement from the north and from the south," he said.
At the same time, the situation around Volchansk, according to Boris Jerelievsky, has not yet received significant coverage in the Ukrainian information field. The main attention of Ukrainian resources is now focused on the events in the Krasny Liman area, the expert noted.
— They are trying to hush up the environment near Volchansk. The media received directives not to inform in any way about what is happening in the north-east of the Kharkiv region," says Boris Jerelievsky.
How the Russian military cleans the cauldron near Volchansk
Units of the "North" group of forces stopped an attempt to break out of the encirclement of the Ukrainian Armed Forces assault group near Volchansk in the area of the village of Gogino, the Russian Defense Ministry reported on September 16. Currently, there are battles for the liberation of Malaya Volchya, located in the western part of the cauldron. In addition, Russian troops defeated the infantry and equipment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the areas of Serdobino, Khripunov and Buzovo in the southern part of the encirclement zone.
During the expansion of the external control zone, Russian units defeated the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the areas of Prykolotny, Petropavlovsk and Novoaleksandrovka, which are located south of the encirclement ring.
During the day, Ukrainian losses in the encirclement amounted to up to 50 militants, two armored vehicles, a car and two ground-based robotic complexes. In total, since the beginning of the month, according to the Russian military department, more than 600 servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, 15 armored vehicles, nine cars, 13 ATVs and 23 ground-based robotic complexes have been destroyed in the boiler.
On September 7, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the blocking of a large group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Volchansk area of the Kharkiv region. According to the ministry, about 1,700 Ukrainian military personnel were surrounded — a force of about four to five battalions.
After that, Russian units continued to strengthen their positions around the isolated group. On September 9, the village of Dolgenke came under their control on the outer contour, while the Russian military occupied Berezniki, located in the inner part of the encirclement.
On September 10, the "North" group units continued to advance along the outer perimeter. As a result, the control zone was expanded to include the settlement of Zarubinka.
Russian troops are simultaneously influencing both contours of the environment — expanding the controlled territory from the outside and reducing the space for maneuvering the forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine inside.
The command of the Russian Armed Forces invited the Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers surrounded near Volchansk to lay down their weapons. Leaflets with instructions on how to surrender are dropped over their positions.
On September 11, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported a second encirclement in the Olkhovatka area. Two Ukrainian battalions were trapped in the ring. The second boiler is located to the southeast of the first one. Olkhovatka itself was occupied by Russian troops on September 15.
