Actor Rupert Grint will play Ron Weasley again, 25 years after the end of the Harry Potter saga. The actor will join the Broadway production of "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" and will play the role of an adult Ron. He will become the second actor from the original cast of the films to return to his character on stage after a long time. About when Grint will take the stage, why his return continues a new trend in Potter, and what place the "Cursed Child" occupies in the history of the wizarding world, see the Izvestia article.

Rupert Grint will continue the story of Ron Weasley on Broadway

Rupert Grint will join the Broadway production of "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" at the Lyric Theatre in New York. The actor will play the adult Ron Weasley for 17 weeks — from February 2 to May 30, 2027. This will be the first time Grint will reprise the role of a character after the end of the film franchise. The actor himself admitted that the return was especially symbolic for him.

Rupert Grint

Ron Weasley has been a part of me since I was 11 years old, and I look forward to meeting him again at this stage of my life. There's something about playing Ron again, when we both became fathers, that closes the circle and makes it a special event; it's both very familiar and completely new. And the joy of returning to Broadway, this time in a role that has defined so much in my life, is truly breathtaking.

The producers of the production, Sonya Friedman and Colin Callender, noted that Grint's participation strengthens the connection between the original Harry Potter story and its theatrical sequel. According to them, the themes of family, growing up, and legacy that underlie the play take on additional meaning when an actor returns to the role, with whom an entire generation of viewers has grown up.

How "The Cursed Child" connects the theater with the film franchise

Grint became the second actor from the cast of the original film franchise to return to his character in the Broadway version of The Cursed Child. The first such step was taken by Tom Felton, who played the role of Draco Malfoy. In the summer of 2025, it was announced that he would join the production as an adult Malfoy — 19 years after the events of the books.

Felton's return aroused great fan interest and became a notable event for Broadway. The production received an additional surge in ticket sales, and the actor himself has repeatedly said that the opportunity to try on the image of Draco again years later became an emotional experience for him. His participation was extended until January 2027.

At the same time, fans should not wait for Felton and Grint to appear on stage together. Their schedules do not overlap: Tom Felton will finish participating in the play in January 2027, and Rupert Grint will take the stage only in February. Nevertheless, both returns show the desire of the creators of the production to connect the theatrical story with the original film saga not only through the characters, but also through the actors who made them famous.

"Harry Potter and the Cursed Child": why does the play remain an important part of Potteriana?

The play "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" was first staged in London in 2016. Its plot unfolds 19 years after the events of the novel "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" and tells not so much about Harry himself as about his son Albus Severus Potter, who enters Hogwarts. Together with Draco Malfoy's son Scorpius, he finds himself embroiled in a dangerous time journey that can change the past and future of the wizarding world.

Adults Harry, Ron, Hermione and Draco play an equally important role in the story. Now they have become parents themselves and are facing the problems of a new generation, and the central themes of the play are the relationship between children and parents, responsibility for past decisions and the cost of trying to change history. That is why the return of the actors of the original films is perceived as especially symbolic: today they, like their characters, are much older than during the filming of the first parts of the franchise.

Over the 10 years of its existence, The Cursed Child has become one of the most successful theatrical projects of recent years. The production was shown in London, New York and other cities around the world, and the total number of tickets sold exceeded 14 million. On Broadway, the play also became the highest-grossing non-musical production in history. The return of first Felton, and now Grint, connects the stage story even more strongly with the original movie saga, thanks to which the world of Harry Potter gained worldwide popularity.
