On the last weekend of August, Gorbushka will once again become a meeting place for generations of Russian rock. On August 29 and 30, the Legend Festival, organized by REN TV in cooperation with LEGENDA PRODUCTION, will take place on three stages of the Gorbunov Recreation Center. The program features bands and musicians for whom "Gorbushka" has become part of their creative biography, as well as representatives of a new generation of rockers. Among the participants are "Alice", "Chaif", "Picnic", "Crematorium", "Gorshenev", Vadim Samoilov and Sergey Bobunets.

Ural character

"Profitability is offset by buzz," Izvestia wrote about Gorbushka in the summer of 1994. Then the newspaper's journalist discovered a place that, according to his impression, was at the same time a concert venue, a market, an interest club and almost a temple (in a certain sense of the word, of course). Gorbunov's recreation center was crowded with young men in leather jackets and T-shirts with "shocking lyrics," selling records and photographs of artists. Here we got to know each other, fiercely argued about music and waited for meetings with our favorite bands. At that time, Gorbushka was not a point on the map of Moscow, but a sign by which friends recognized their own.

— Everything that happens here seems amazing to me, even against the background of our super-amazing times. Here is the infamous Alice group. Terrifying officials and city authorities everywhere she performs (clashes between fans and police, destroyed municipal property) — even a concert was canceled in St. Petersburg. Everything is going on almost peacefully in Gorbunov's Recreation center," Nikolai Focht wrote.

In those years, the music that was born in the rock centers of the country confidently entered the Moscow venues. Bands that were only recently known from tape recordings, apartment tours, and semi-legal festivals came here. The Sverdlovsk rock club has taken a special place in this story.

The archives of Izvestia contain materials about the debut of Nautilus on the Gorbushka stage after the band moved from Sverdlovsk, as well as about two concerts of the Yekaterinburg Chaif group in the last shelter of Russian rock, as DC Focht called it. He wrote that the listeners easily paid a "modest sum for a ticket" — eight thousand rubles, and also that he expected to see an older audience at the concert, but he was mistaken — a whole generation of young listeners came. Hence the observation: "Chaif has survived. Because I didn't grow up with the listener."

— It was one of the first halls where the rows of chairs were removed and a standing orchestra was made — then it was very rare. If the hall remained seated, people got up and broke their chairs during the concerts," band leader Vladimir Shakhrin recalls today.

"Legend" on the "Humpback"

The program includes Chaif, as well as performances by the founding fathers of the Sverdlovsk Rock Club, the "third Rome" of Russian rock music after Moscow and Leningrad, as it was called 30 years ago on the pages of the newspaper. These are "Urfin Jus", "Nastya" and "Egor Belkin and Friends".

— Rock music for Sverdlovsk is not only a concert, not only a festival. It was communication, first of all. Alexey Oktiabrinovich Balabanov, whose monument was recently erected near the Youth Palace, had a huge impact on the development of Sverdlovsk music, although he was not a musician. But even at school, he and Evgeny Gorenburg organized the band "Carrie", where he played the bass guitar. Vladimir Khotinenko, a famous film director, created the Time Machine group at the Architectural Institute. Even the poster has been preserved. This boiler was of great importance to us," recalls Alexander Pantykin, the leader of the Urfin Jus group.

The name "Legend" is not an exaggeration. Every team here has a story. The Moscow rock band Va-Bank also celebrated its 40th anniversary this year.

— I want to repeat once again the moment of endless happiness on stage that all the musicians experienced when we played our musical concert at the Gorbushka in March. We remembered the good old "All-In" of the difficult period, and it was very well received by the public. I think we'll definitely play this piece. It is especially important that the festival takes place on the "Humpback". For all rock fans, this place is absolutely iconic. I remember when I came to this festival for the first time, I was overwhelmed by a nostalgic, warm and pleasant wave — everything is as it was then," says band leader Alexander F. Sklyar.

In total, the program of the two-day open—air includes more than three dozen teams. On August 29, "Alice", Vadim Samoilov, "Gorshenev", "Crematorium", "F.P.G", "Operation Plasticine", "Kalinov Bridge", "Brigade Contractor", "Mongol Shuudan", "Mavashi Group", "Bakhyt Kompot", "Sagrada / Salt of the Earth" will perform, "Free Mode", "Acoustic Forest", "Elena Jaya", "Anya from St. Petersburg".

The next day, in addition to the aforementioned ones, the relay will be hosted by Picnic, Pilot, Yorsh, Animation, Sergey Bobunets, Seryoga, Distemper, Goroda, Donera, BeZ B.

In the archives of Izvestia, the "Humpback" remained one of the symbols of its time. In 1994, the newspaper wrote: "Gorbushka is alive — the myth of unbroken, a little hasty and awkward, but courageous, and most importantly, living art is alive." Three decades later, these words are still relevant. And rock is still alive—and young.
